Studied political science, international relations, and international economics at the universities of Tübingen, Berlin, Bonn, Aberdeen and at Princeton University (Woodrow Wilson School), MA and PhD; Draeger Fellow, Harvard University; until 1985, senior research fellow at the Research Institute of the German Council on Foreign Relations, Bonn; served several times as an advisor to the German UN Delegation, New York; represented the German Marshall Fund of the United States in Europe and was a lecturer at the Federal Academy for Public Administration, Bonn; since 1981, program director and since 1986, executive vice-chairman, Atlantik-Brücke e.V., Berlin; founder and chairman of Youth for Understanding Foundation which finances one-year fellowships in the U.S. for Eastern German high school students and in Germany for American minority students.
