Under the mediation of Oman, the United States and Iran have started negotiations on the nuclear program of the regime. While the outcome of these talks in Muscat is open, the latest protests in Iran against the Islamic Republic’s regime have taken a tremendous toll. Thousands of citizens have been killed, and the number of unreported cases is likely high. While U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed new sanctions and threatened military action against the mullahs, the European Union has put the revolutionary guards on its list of international terrorist groups, and the United Nations have expressed solidarity with the protesters.

Much remains unclear for Iran after decades of repressive rule and Western attempts to limit its reach. We have asked two of Washington’s and Berlin’s most renowned Iran experts to discuss the regional and geopolitical consequences of the latest developments.

Speakers:

Kirsten Fontenrose is a Strategic Advisor at Systems Planning & Analysis which is specialized on drone technologies and counter-drone systems. She is also a nonresident Senior Fellow at the Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative in the Atlantic Council’s Middle East Programs in Washington, D.C. Prior to this engagement, Kirsten Fontenrose spent 2018 as Senior Director for the Gulf at the National Security Council, leading the development of US policy toward nations of the GCC, Yemen, Egypt, and Jordan. Mariam Claren is a Special Representative and the Head of Iran Programs at the human rights NGO HÁWAR based in Berlin. She calls herself an Iran activist and an anti-fascist. Mariam Claren is the daughter of the former political prisoner Nahid Taghavi.
