How to participate?

The program is directed at teachers in the USA and the German federal states of the former GDR. We give particular consideration to individuals who have had little or no experience in the USA or Germany to date.

Criteria for program participation:

  • Active professional activity as a teacher at a secondary school
  • Teachers of social studies, history, English (for the trip to the USA) or German (for the trip to Germany)
  • Demonstrable, exceptional commitment as a teacher
  • Interest and openness to international relations and willingness to actively participate during the program
  • Good physical condition to endure long days of travel and walking
  • Little to no previous experience in the destination country
  • Willingness to remain active in the alumni network after the trip

Application process:

The Transatlantic Study Trip for Teachers offers US or East German teachers the opportunity to take part in a study trip. Due to different vacation periods, we can only consider applicants from one or two federal states per year for the trip with German teachers. To apply, you must answer questions about your motivation and submit a resume. Applications must be submitted via our application portal. Access to the portal is only possible during the application periods via this page.

We want to actively promote diversity in transatlantic relations. That is why we particularly welcome applications from Black people, people of color, people with a family history of migration and displacement, people from the LGBTQI* community, and people with disabilities.

The next study trip for teachers from Saxony to the US will take place in fall 2026. The application period begins in January 2026. The next study trip for teachers from the US to Germany will take place in June 2027.

Please submit your application for the 2026 Transatlantic Teacher Trip using our application form. Please write your answers in English and submit your resume in German.

Costs:

The Transatlantic Teacher Trips are a nearly fully funded program financed by Atlantik-Brücke’s own resources. Due to the significant price differences between the US and Germany, we unfortunately have to charge a cost-sharing fee of €800 per participant for the trip to the US.
