„Climate change requires a political response“

Together with Pierre-Gerlier Forest, PhD, President and CEO, National Institute for Public Health (Quebec), our Vice-Chairmen Michael Hüther, Director and Member of the Presidium, German Economic Institute, published a Briefing Paper on „Climate Neutrality and Regional Development: Canada and Germany’s Common Challenges“. This paper was published in the context of the German-Canadian Conference 2025 (05.05-06-05).

The paper discusses the importance of developing strong and innovative policies to address the climate crisis and to promote a transition toward a new, sustainable economic and social model. It emphasizes that climate policy must be a top political priority. However, it highlights a commonly overlooked issue: the regional impact of climate action. Different regions within countries are affected in varying ways, depending on their industries, economic structures, and social conditions. This regional variation adds complexity to the implementation of climate policies. Germany and Canada serve as key examples, where regional dynamics introduce additional challenges to achieving climate neutrality. At least on the surface, both governments appear to recognize that considering the regional perspective is essential for the success of their climate strategies. This paper aims to deepen the understanding of the regional dimension of climate policy.
