General James Mattis speaks at the Young Leaders Conference about what matters most

General James Mattis, former U.S. Secretary of Defense, spoke at Atlantik-Brücke’s Young Leaders Conference 2021 via Zoom.

James N. Mattis is a retired U.S. Marine Corps four-star general who served as the 26th Secretary of Defense. During his more than four decades in uniform, Secretary Mattis commanded forces in the Persian Gulf War, in Afghanistan after 9/11, and in the Iraq War in 2003.

From 2007 to 2010, he commanded the United States Joint Forces Command and also served as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Transformation. He was commander of United States Central Command from 2010 to 2013.

After his retirement, Secretary Mattis served as the Davies Family Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He co-edited the book, “Warriors & Citizens: American Views of Our Military.”
