Democracies on both sides of the Atlantic are under growing pressure – from polarisation, eroding trust in institutions and a deepening sense of political alienation. At the same time, a new generation of citizens, movements and political talents is stepping forward, determined to shape and renew the system from within.
Yet the promise of democracy – that it works for the many, not the few – is far from self-evident. Who actually gets to enter politics? Whose voices are heard, whose experiences shape decisions and which structural barriers still keep large parts of society on the sidelines? We will take a closer look at the challenges faced by marginalized groups, including stateless and undocumented individuals, and discuss how democratic systems can better include those who are structurally excluded from participation.
This evening brings together perspectives from the United States and Germany to explore how democratic representation can be strengthened. Afterwards, a reception will provide an opportunity for further conversations and networking.
