The latest protests in Iran against the Islamic Republic’s regime have taken a tremendous toll. Thousands of citizens have been killed, and the number of unreported cases is likely high. Not only is Ayatollah Chamenei’s regime violently oppressing men, women, and children in Iran, they are also blocking access to the internet for almost everyone in the country. While U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened sanctions and military action against the mullahs, the European Union and the United Nations have expressed solidarity with the protesters.
Much remains unclear for Iran after decades of repressive rule and Western attempts to limit its reach. We have asked one of Washington’s most renowned Iran experts to discuss the regional and geopolitical consequences of the latest developments.
Suzanne Maloney is the Vice President and Director of the Foreign Policy Program at the Brookings Institution. In her research she focuses on Persian Gulf Energy. Prior to this engagement, she served as an external advisor to senior State Department officials during the Obama administration and as a member of the Policy Planning staff of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in the U.S. government of President George W.
