What Colorado’s Town Halls Reveal about the Transatlantic Bond

When watching transatlantic relations today, one is inevitably glued to the big political stage. In the spotlight: U.S. President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The plot: every handshake in the Oval Office, scrutinized for whether diplomatic flattery will immediately be followed by the next public swipe. Observers endlessly debate whether common ground can still be found on Ukraine or tariffs. And what it means when the American president, responding to German criticism over Iran, publicly tells the Chancellor to focus on “fixing his broken country” instead.

Throughout Trump’s second term, conflicts like these have fueled the narrative that the transatlantic partnership is hanging by a thread. Let alone his earlier rhetoric about seizing Greenland and openly unsettling NATO ally Denmark. Yet, as in any theater play, the lead actors do not make up the entire ensemble. Behind and beside the main stage, countless other players sustain the performance and turn it into a cohesive whole. How effectively this ensemble collaborates far away from Washington and Berlin becomes strikingly apparent some 1,500 miles west of the U.S. capital. At the foot of the Rocky Mountains.

German companies are investing in the United States at near-record levels.

[related]At the Atlantik-Brücke Young Leaders Conference 2026, 50 leaders from Germany and the United States gathered in the Mile High City of Denver, discovering a far more nuanced and decidedly more optimistic reality of German American relations. Particularly on an economic level. While the constant threat of new tariffs unsettles European exporters, German companies are responding with a tangible counterstrategy: they are investing in the United States at near-record levels, as business leaders highlighted during a panel discussion at the Denver Art Museum with the Young Leaders.

To bypass tariffs and secure a presence in the world’s largest market, companies are expanding their footprint across the Atlantic. In the Denver metropolitan area, they find a contrast to the challenges back home, where soaring energy costs and suffocating bureaucracy frequently stall progress. Colorado, by contrast, offers a can-do spirit alongside hard location factors: 30 national research laboratories pioneering hubs in AI, quantum computing or aerospace and a highly professional talent pool. This exchange is actively supported on the ground by initiatives like the Bavarian Guild, born out of the Munich–Denver economic partnership to connect entrepreneurs and investors on a local level. When the city hosts the Denver Wiesn in autumn or its traditional Christkindlmarkt in winter, the deep connection between economic ties and cultural community becomes tangible. The takeaway seems clear: stop concentrating on what happens in Washington and simply get to work.

Local governments simply shoulder the load so that everyday life keeps running. Driven by a quality that has become all but extinct on the federal level: unyielding pragmatism.

But this boom succeeds, among other reasons, because the suburbs surrounding Denver make it possible. During a session with seven regional mayors, it quickly becomes evident that rapid growth brings challenges to the local level. Housing has become scarce and expensive, pricing out young talents, police officers, and teachers alike. Meanwhile, AI data centers demand enormous amounts of electricity and water in a region that has struggled with drought for years. The major reservoirs of the Colorado River system sit at barely a quarter of their capacity in August, a reality Young Leaders could witness firsthand during a whitewater rafting tour. And because more people are shopping online, large malls sit empty, costing cities the crucial local sales tax revenues they rely on.But in these suburbs, too, local leaders act quickly and look for real solutions. Abandoned malls are turned into new residential neighborhoods together with private developers. And when dealing with tech firms, cities negotiate water consumption and, if needed, put temporary building stops in place to set clear rules for power and water — without scaring companies away. Local governments simply shoulder the load so that everyday life keeps running. Driven by a quality that has become all but extinct on the federal level: unyielding pragmatism.

Because local American politics is far more than an ideological trench fight between Republicans and Democrats. “Potholes are neither red nor blue,” as one mayor pointedly remarked. At the regional mayors’ council, local leaders — many of them officially non-partisan but spanning both political spectrums — sit around a table, speak plainly and agree on compromises. Political polarization across the United States may be as real as ever. Yet on the local level, people quietly get on with fixing the things that actually shape daily life.

And this is perhaps one of the most vital takeaways of this conference for the Young Leaders. That genuine dialogue is still possible. And that the transatlantic bond is far more resilient than federal politics suggest. It is not sustained by summits and Truth Social posts alone. Anyone seeking to understand where German American relations truly stand should not concentrate solely on the next handshake in the Oval Office. Instead, look to where the foundation is actually built. In corporate headquarters and factory floors, in neighborhoods and town halls. Driven by people. Because thewell-known principle still holds true. All politics is — and economics may be — local.

Crises, Compromise, and Karaoke: Inside the 2026 Young Leaders Conference

Over the course of six days in Denver, Colorado, a group of young Europeans and Americans confronted every major problem facing transatlantic relations today; and in one spirited working session after another, fixed them all. The end.

Kidding, of course.

Despite our motivation and professional accomplishments, I do not believe any of the fifty attendees of the 2026 Atlantik-Brücke German-American Young Leaders Conference were naive enough to think that in under a week, we would put any dent in the immense challenges caused by a shifting global order, the uneasiness of artificial intelligence, threats to NATO, or the loss of trust among historical allies. What we did do, instead, was voice our pessimism.

In an exercise on our first full day, we organized ourselves along an axis based on our feelings about the state of transatlantic relations. If most optimistic was a 10 on a scale, I put myself just above a 6. To me, the long-standing issues facing the transatlantic alliance have been exacerbated by the current administration. But I believed, as I imagine many on the optimistic side did, that although the relationship will likely have to take on a new form and there will be wounds to recover from, we will survive.

So I was caught off guard to see not just the number of people on the pessimistic side, but that the majority of them were European. I wondered if my optimism was naive, and I knew I was not the only one. An American policy advisor and fellow optimist expressed dismay that despite all their work trying to develop relationships, the European counterparts they deal with on a daily basis may also actually be feeling as cynical as those on the other side of the hotel event space.

By the end, we Germans and Americans (and one dapper Dane and a lovely Pole) did not in fact save transatlantic relations. If anything, we unearthed new concerns — rarely the recipe for renewed optimism. Dr. Malte Schmiedling, a Senior Policy Advisor on AI in Health for the German Federal Ministry of Health, and a member of my cohort, had originally taken a middle position on the scale. But after a tour and presentation at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP), a world-renowned space science research facility, he slouched to a pessimistic 3 or 4. Dr. Schmiedling observed that even as the US develops its own defense capabilities, it was keeping Europe at arms length, ultimately sidelining a strong ally. But even as Europe is finding its footing in this unequal partnership, he noted that his pessimism is not yet at 0. “It can still go much worse,” he added cheekily.

Problems felt on both sides of the Atlantic

The tenor of the week was not all pessimism and frustration, though. The diverse range of panel discussions allowed experts to share their thoughts about problems felt on both sides of the Atlantic. In a panel on immigration policy, lawyers spoke about navigating the influx of migrants into Denver for nearly two years, starting from late 2022. During that time, the city took in over forty thousand migrants, among the highest per capita of cities in the US. To support the asylum seekers awaiting work authorization — and avoid creating a larger homeless situation — Denver implemented a program that provided rent-free housing, legal assistance and workforce training.

In another session with The Metro Mayor Caucus, a bipartisan group of mayors from the Denver area who collaborate to find solutions for their communities, the local leaders also shared their insights from their on-the-ground efforts in addressing the migrant surge. Germany’s own crisis of asylum seekers nearly a decade prior also came up as a case study. I was struck by the innovation the panelists showed —- paying for tickets to relocate migrants to places where they had family, for example —- but also by the costs. According to one mayor, that meant cutting nearly $50 million dollars from their city budget and several hundred layoffs, all while dealing with the day-to-day responsibilities of “police, parks and potholes.”

“My big takeaway is that we all have issues,” one mayor said. “And I think we all have solutions,” he continued. “But we won’t know what those issues are or what those solutions might be if we don’t talk to each other, ask questions and be willing to listen.”

I enjoyed getting to know my cohort. These current and future leaders are well-informed, nuanced in their analyses, curious and willing to listen. It is why I still felt a certain optimism by the end of the week. Beyond their professional credentials, though, I learned that they were also funny, competitive and some of the most enthusiastic karaoke buddies on either side of the Atlantic. My German comrades: I will be practicing “Skandal Im Sperrbezirk” for the next time we meet!

Young Leaders 2025: Über Grenzen hinweg

Die 46. Young Leaders Conference der Atlantik-Brücke wurde vom 9.-15. August 2025 auf Schloss Neuhardenberg in Brandenburg ausgerichtet und brachte insgesamt 50 Führungskräfte aus den Vereinigten Staaten und Deutschland zusammen. Was versprach eine besondere Woche der Interaktion, Diskussion und des Netzwerkens zur Stärkung der transatlantischen Beziehungen zu werden, wurde für die Young Leaders Kohorte zu einer ganz besonderen Erfahrung auf beruflicher und privater Ebene.

Nach einer herzlichen Begrüßung durch Julia Friedlander, Geschäftsführerin der Atlantik-Brücke, und den Organisatorinnen und Organisatoren der Woche – Tobias Luthe, Louise Lüdke und Franka Ellman – eröffnete Prof. Dr. Michael Hüther, Direktor und Mitglied des Präsidiums des Instituts der deutschen Wirtschaft und stellvertretender Vorsitzender der Atlantik-Brücke, die Konferenz.

Er sprach über die sich wandelnde Balance zwischen Hard Power und Soft Power, die strategische Ambiguität der Trump-Regierung, die “erschöpfte Globalisierung” und den Abschied von der internationalen Sicherheits- und Handelsordnung der Nachkriegszeit. Weiterhin thematisierte er die Rolle Chinas, Deutschlands Zeitenwende und die Reform der Schuldenbremse, die höhere Verteidigungsinvestitionen ermöglicht und Deutschland und die EU als unabhängigere Verbündete stärkt.

Prof. Hüther hob die Spannungen hervor, die durch die Globalisierung entstanden sind, wobei sowohl deren Gewinner als auch Verlierer die politische Polarisierung vorantreiben – wie der Aufstieg der AfD in Deutschland und der MAGA-Bewegung im ländlichen Amerika deutlich macht. Diese Spannungen zu bewältigen und gleichzeitig die demokratische Selbstbestimmung zu bewahren sei nach wie vor eine zentrale Herausforderung unserer Zeit, betonte er.

[related] Am zweiten Tag der Konferenz entwarfen die Fellows in Szenario-Sitzungen jeweils best- und worst-case Szenarien für die Zukunft Deutschlands und die Vereinigten Staaten. Mit diversen Perspektiven auf Wirtschaft, Politik, Sicherheit, Technologie, Gesellschaft und Umwelt boten diese Sitzungen einen wertvollen Rahmen für eine vertiefte Auseinandersetzung mit dem, was in den nächsten Jahren auf dem Spiel steht, und zeigten Möglichkeiten für intensivierte Zusammenarbeit und Innovation auf.

Mehrere Young Leaders Alumni kehrten als Vortragende zurück nach Neuhardenberg. Karsten Uhlmann (YL 2003), Geschäftsführender Gesellschafter, Frankfurter Brauhaus, und Vorstandsmitglied der Atlantik-Brücke, gab einen kurzen Einblick in seine Biographie: Vom Aufwachsen in Ostberlin über den Kauf der Frankfurter Brauhaus GmbH im Jahr 2003, dem Ausbau des Betriebs, den Herausforderungen steigender Energiepreise sowie der globalen Expansion einschließlich der Eröffnung einer deutschen Brauerei in Charlotte, USA.

Die Diskussion erörterte auch die sich wandelnde politische Landschaft in Ostdeutschland und das anhaltende Gefühl der Marginalisierung und unvollständigen Integration Jahrzehnte nach der Wiedervereinigung. Seine Überlegungen unterstrichen, wie eng Wirtschaft, Politik und Geschichte miteinander verflochten sind.

Paula Cipierre (YL 2024), Global Head of Privacy bei HCL Tech, teilte Einblicke in die Regulierung von Künstlicher Intelligenz, die Balance zwischen Innovation und Ethik sowie die Herausforderung, globale Standards zu etablieren. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt lag auf dem Vergleich deutscher bzw. europäischer und US-amerikanischer Ansätze der KI-Governance. Dabei wurde Deutschlands Rolle innerhalb des EU AI Act der stärker exekutiv geprägten, prinzipienbasierten Strategie der USA gegenübergestellt. Ihre Analyse verdeutlichte, dass die Weiterentwicklung der KI-Regulierung auch in den kommenden Jahren eine zentrale Aufgabe bleiben wird.

Dr. Max Krahé (YL 2022), Mitgründer und Forschungsdirektor des Dezernats Zukunft, und Dr. Florian Schuster-Johnson, Head of Growth & Budget Lab des Dezernat Zukunft, beschrieben Ihre Arbeit in dem Berliner Think Tank und skizzierten Deutschlands ökonomische und fiskalpolitische Zeitenwende sowie deren Möglichkeiten und Trade-Offs. Der Vortrag und die Diskussion regten dazu an kritisch zu hinterfragen, wie die transatlantische Zusammenarbeit auf die sich wandelnden geopolitischen und technologischen Realitäten reagieren kann.

Das Programm bot auch die Möglichkeit zum direkten Austausch mit Fachleuten, die Deutschlands politische und sicherheitspolitische Landschaft gestalten. Oberst Karsten Struß vermittelte Einblicke in die laufenden Modernisierungsprozesse der Bundeswehr und die Herausforderung der Anpassung an neue sicherheitspolitische Realitäten. Claudia Kade, Leiterin des Politikredaktion bei Die WELT, kommentierte die ersten 100 Tagen der neuen Koalition und diskutierte die Auswirkungen des algorithmischen Nachrichtenkonsums sowie dessen Rolle bei der Gestaltung der Medienberichterstattung.

Zwei Tagesausflüge nach Berlin ermöglichten Raum für einen politischen Dialog verbunden mit einem kulturellen Austausch.

Im Edge East Side Tower gab Antonia Bruhn, Senior Public Policy Manager DACH, Amazon Web Services (AWS), einen Überblick über Cloud Computing im Zeitalter der (digitalen) Souveränität. Clemens John, Public Policy Manager für Digital & Devices, gab einen Einblick in die aktuellen Entwicklungen des Projekt Kuiper, Amazons erstes Weltraumprojekt und satellitengestütztes Breitbandnetzwerk in der niedrigen Erdumlaufbahn, das schnellere und erschwingliche Breitbandverbindungen für unterversorgte Gemeinden weltweit bereitstellen soll. Afra Gloria Müller, Corporate Affairs Manager, berichtete über die aktuellen lokalen Community-Engagement-Programme von Amazon in Berlin und der DACH-Region, darunter KiezLab, das gemeinnützigen Organisationen in der Nachbarschaft kostenlose Arbeitsräume zur Verfügung stellt. Der Austausch bei Amazon unterstrich, wie globale Unternehmen einen lokalen Beitrag leisten und gleichzeitig internationale Herausforderungen in den Bereichen Konnektivität und Datenverwaltung adressieren können.

Politische Debatten und kultureller Austausch

Siemtje Möller (YL 2018), Mitglied des Bundestages (SPD), stellvertretende Fraktionsvorsitzende und ehemalige Parlamentarische Staatssekretärin beim Bundesminister der Verteidigung unter Bundeskanzler Scholz, beleuchtete die Herausforderungen Deutschlands bei der Angleichung politischer Ambitionen an die Verteidigungsbereitschaft, in der Stärkung militärischer Kapazitäten und die Auswirkungen auf die transatlantische Zusammenarbeit. Als Young Leaders Alumna teilte sie auch Erinnerungen an die YL-Konferenz 2018, bei der sie gemeinsam mit Julia Friedlander eine Gruppensitzung zum Thema westliche Verteidigung leitete.

Der anschließende Besuch im Bundestag bot neben einer Tour durch das Reichstagsgebäude aktuelle Einblicke in die Struktur des koalitionsbasierten parlamentarischen Systems Deutschlands und die Frage, wie der Bundestag die Führungsrolle Deutschlands in Europa prägt.

Bei einem Besuch im Bundeskanzleramt trafen die Young Leaders Jacob Schrot (YL 2022), Leiter des Kanzlerbüros, und Ole Funke, Gruppenleiter im Bundeskanzleramt. In einem Gespräch über transatlantische Beziehungen und Europapolitik teilten sie ihre Einblicke in Hinblick auf die Prioritäten Deutschlands innerhalb der EU und hoben die Bedeutung der stärkeren Abstimmung europäischer und transatlantischer Strategien hervor. Sie betonten die Notwendigkeit einer starken Koordinierung bei der Bewältigung gemeinsamer geopolitischer Herausforderungen und unterstrichen die Rolle des Bundeskanzleramtes bei der Gestaltung des deutschen Beitrags zur europäischen Führungsrolle und zur transatlantischen Einheit. Dieser Besuch vertiefte das Verständnis für die zentrale Rolle des Bundeskanzlers Friedrich Merz bei der Steuerung der nationalen Politik und der Stärkung der transatlantischen Zusammenarbeit.

Das kulturelle Rahmenprogramm gipfelte in einem Studiobesuch beim Maler und Künstler Christian Awe und einem Austausch über die Berliner Kunstszene. Eines seiner großen Werke ist das monumentale Gemälde „Begegnung“, welches im Jahr 2016 an der Fassade der Landesvertretung Niedersachsen in Berlin in unmittelbarer Nähe des Holocaust Mahnmals angebracht war. Dieses Werk sowie weitere seiner Wandbilder in Berlin sind ein eindrucksvolles Beispiel für die sorgfältige Planung und künstlerische Vision, die erforderlich sind, um ein Projekt dieser Größenordnung zu realisieren und dabei das Gleichgewicht zwischen Abstraktion und Fotorealismus zu wahren. Für die Teilnehmenden wurde deutlich, wie die Schnittstelle zwischen Kunst, Geschichte und öffentlichem Raum als Katalysator für Dialog wirken kann und wie der kulturelle Austausch zur Vertiefung transatlantischer Verbundenheit beitragen kann.

Ergebnisse

In sieben World Café Sessions diskutierten die Fellows in Kleingruppen aktuelle transatlantische Herausforderungen – vom Wettbewerb mit China über neue Verteidigungsstrategien bis hin zur globalen Energiewende. Diese Sitzungen dienten als Sprungbrett für den Austausch von Ideen, die später die Bemühungen der Young Leaders in ihren jeweiligen Arbeitsgruppen unterstützen sollten.

Während der gesamten Woche fungierten diese Arbeitsgruppen als Inkubatoren für konkrete Initiativen zur Stärkung und Modernisierung der transatlantischen Partnerschaft. Verteidigung, Technologie, Handel und regionale Allianzen wurden nicht als isolierte Herausforderungen behandelt, sondern als Bausteine eines übergeordneten strategischen Rahmens betrachtet.

Kurzzusammenfassungen der Arbeitsgruppen liefern Einblicke in die bewegenden gesellschaftspolitischen Themen unserer Zeit:

AI Crossroads: Innovation, Ethik und globale Governance in einer Welt strategischer Rivalität – Die Teilnehmenden erörterten die Regulierung sektorübergreifender Risiken im Bereich Künstliche Intelligenz und betonten die Notwendigkeit einheitlicher Sicherheitsstandards sowie wirksamer Mechanismen zur Bewältigung ethischer, sicherheitsrelevanter und missbrauchsbezogener Fragestellungen. Die Gruppe prüfte unterschiedliche Ansätze, darunter die Nutzung bestehender internationaler Foren, die Einrichtung eines neuen Multi-Stakeholder-Gremiums nach dem Vorbild der IAEO im Nuklearbereich oder den Abschluss internationaler Vereinbarungen in Anlehnung an das Pariser Klimaabkommen. Übergeordnetes Ziel war es, die KI Governance so weiterzuentwickeln, dass sowohl internationale Zusammenarbeit als auch Innovation gefördert werden.

Hard Power, neue Realitäten: NATO, Ukraine und die Zukunft kollektiver westlicher Verteidigung – Die Teilnehmenden erarbeiteten innovative politische Empfehlungen zur Stärkung der transatlantischen Sicherheit. Vorgeschlagen wurden unter anderem eine stärkere transatlantische Abstimmung bei der Bewältigung sicherheitspolitischer Herausforderungen durch China, eine verstärkte Führungsrolle Europas im Hinblick auf eine nachhaltige Friedenslösung in der Ukraine sowie innovative Finanzierungsmechanismen zur Unterstützung der europäischen Aufrüstung.

Die neue Handelspolitik: Lieferketten, Souveränität und globale Machtverschiebungen – Die Arbeitsgruppe identifizierte zentrale Herausforderungen im internationalen Handel und in der Weltwirtschaft und besprach, wie die transatlantische Partnerschaft zur Bewältigung dieser Herausforderungen ausbaut werden kann. Behandelt wurden insbesondere sicherheitspolitische Risiken, externe Effekte im Zusammenhang mit dem Aufstieg nicht-marktwirtschaftlicher Volkswirtschaften sowie inländische sozioökonomische Auswirkungen von Handelspolitik. Die Prinzipien des freien und offenen Handels wurden auch in einer sich wandelnden Handelsordnung als zentrale Leitziele bestätigt, auch wenn eine weitere Eskalation von Handelsbarrieren im kurzfristigen Ausblick wahrscheinlich erscheint.

Eine strategische Partnerschaft? Der transatlantische Bund jenseits der Nostalgie – Die Gruppe erarbeitete Möglichkeiten, das transatlantische Bündnis zu modernisieren und es sowohl an den historischen gemeinsamen Werten als auch an den heutigen transaktionalen Interessen auszurichten. Die Gruppe schlug vor, dass Deutschland und die Vereinigten Staaten ein bilaterales Berufsausbildungsprogramm, ein Programm für die Reparatur und das Recycling von Handelsschiffen sowie eine Initiative zur Energieversorgungssicherheit für deutsche Investitionen zur Unterstützung der Diversifizierung der US-Energieversorgung einrichten sollten.

Durch die Skizzierung konkreter Initiativen – einschließlich Umsetzungsstrategien, Ressourcenplanung und Einbindung von Interessengruppen – zeigten die Arbeitsgruppen, wie koordiniertes Handeln die kollektive Stärke ausbauen, die Anpassungsfähigkeit verbessern und Leadership über Grenzen hinweg fördern kann.

Gegen Ende des Programms fand ein besonderes Kamingespräch statt, bei dem vier Young Leaders ihre persönlichen Erfahrungen zum Thema Führung mit der Gruppe teilten. Nach den Begegnungen mit diversen Young Leaders Alumni in Führungspositionen gewann diese Diskussion zum Abschluss des Programms 2025 eine ganz neue Bedeutung.

Nachhaltige Wirkung

Die Konferenz endete mit einer gemeinsamen Reflexion zentraler Erkenntnisse und einem Abschiedsabendessen am Flughafen Neuhardenberg. Die Woche verdeutlichte den Wert vielfältiger Perspektiven, die Notwendigkeit, Annahmen kritisch zu hinterfragen, und die Bedeutung, Dialoge in konkrete Initiativen zu übersetzen. Die Young Leaders verließen die Konferenz mit einem erneuerten Bekenntnis zu gemeinsamen demokratischen Werten sowie einem gestärkten transatlantischen Netzwerk und neuen Freundschaften, die sich über die Woche hinaus weiter vertiefen werden. Am 20. Mai luden Microsoft und die Atlantik-Brücke ihre Alumni-Netzwerke – Microsoft’s Young Professionals, und die Young Leaders sowie New Bridge Alumni der Atlantik-Brücke – zu einer gemeinsamen Veranstaltung in die Microsoft Digital Eatery in Berlin ein. Der Young-Leaders-Alumnus und Bundestagsabgeordnete Armand Zorn (SPD) diskutierte mit Nooshin Soltani, Cybersecurity- und Digital-Policy-Officer der US-Botschaft in Deutschland, über Chancen und Herausforderungen der transatlantischen Zusammenarbeit im Technologiesektor. Moderiert wurde das Gespräch von New-Bridge-Alumn und Journalist*in Azade Pesmen und Jennifer Pernau, Senior Manager of Government Affairs bei Microsoft Deutschland. Im Rahmen des interaktiven Fishbowl-Formats brachten sich zahlreiche Alumni und Fellows kritisch in die Diskussion ein, bevor der Abend mit Drinks und der Möglichkeit, neue Kontakte zu knüpfen, ausklang.

Am Rande der Veranstaltung sprachen wir mit Armand Zorn über die Potenziale und Risiken von Künstlicher Intelligenz und den Kampf gegen Desinformationen.

Young Leaders Alumni Day 2025

Im Anschluss an die traditionelle Deutsch-Amerikanische Konferenz veranstaltete die Atlantik-Brücke gemeinsam mit ihrer Schwesterorganisation, dem American Council on Germany, die zweite Ausgabe des Young Leaders Alumni Day. Nach dem erfolgreichen Start des Formats im letzten Herbst in Hamburg nahm das diesjährige Programm unsere Alumni mit auf eine aufschlussreiche Reise durch Berlin – mit exklusivem Zugang hinter die Kulissen und spannenden Diskussionen.

Der Tag begann mit einer privaten Führung durch das ICE-Instandhaltungswerk der Deutschen Bahn in Berlin-Rummelsburg, einem wichtigen Knotenpunkt im Hochgeschwindigkeitsnetz des Unternehmens. Wir diskutierten den aktuellen Wandel in der Mobilität und die Zukunft des Schienenverkehrs in Deutschland, bevor es weiter in die Wartungshalle ging, in der wir einen einzigartigen Einblick in den täglichen Betrieb erhielten.

Als nächstes besuchte die Gruppe den Think Tank Dezernat Zukunft – Institut für Makrofinanzen. Unser Young Leader Alumnus Max Krahé, Mitbegründer und Forschungsdirektor, und Florian Schuster-Johnson, Leiter des Growth & Budget Lab, stellten uns ihre innovative Arbeit hier in Berlin vor und leiteten eine anregende Diskussion über die Zukunft der deutschen Wirtschaft an.

Den Tag ließen wir bei der Axel Springer SE ausklingen. Wir erhielten Einblicke in die digitale Strategie des Unternehmens, nahmen an einer Führung durch den BILD-Newsroom teil und sprachen über den Wandel im Journalismus und über die Zukunft von Deutschlands größter Tageszeitung.

Der Abend gipfelte in einem wunderbaren Abendessen und einem atemberaubenden Blick aus dem exklusiven Journalisten-Club im Herzen der Stadt und bot den Alumni die Möglichkeit, ihre Kontakte aufzufrischen und die transatlantischen Verbindungen über Branchen und Generationen hinweg zu vertiefen.

Insights from the Young Leaders Program Alumni Day.

After celebrating the Young Leaders Program’s 50th anniversary last year, Atlantik-Brücke was excited to host a full Alumni Day in 2024, designed to strengthen the sense of community and create space for new connections within the network. The day was packed with insightful experiences and discussions, offering a deep dive into the innovative work happening in the Hamburg region.

Our journey began just outside the city at Jungheinrich AG, a key player in the intralogistics sector. Alumni enjoyed an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of one of their major production facilities in Germany, followed by engaging conversations with board members on topics such as automation, production techniques, sustainable corporate growth, and the evolving global markets.

In the afternoon, the group headed to the Otto Campus in Hamburg to explore the ongoing digital transformation of one of Germany’s iconic brands. Tarek Müller, Co-Founder of AboutYou, and Christian Leybold, Founding Partner at Headline, shared insights into their approaches to digitalization, innovation, and market leadership, sparking lively discussions among the participants.

The day concluded in a wonderful reception at Hapag-Lloyd AG in the heart of Hamburg, where alumni from various generations and sectors seized the opportunity to network. Undoubtedly, the evening’s highlight was a panel featuring three notable alumni – Dr. Edelgard Bulmahn, Dr. Anne-Marie Großmann, and Cihan Sügür – who shared personal stories about their career paths and leadership lessons, setting the stage for continued conversation throughout the evening.

Young Leaders Conference 2024: “Why follow when you can lead?”

Courageous leadership in a multipolar world, transatlantic partnership in the 21st century, and the
transformation of industrial and societal ecosystems – these were some of the topics explored at the
German-American Young Leaders Conference in Detroit, Michigan, United States, from August 10-16,
2024. Report on the Young Leaders Conference 2024 by Felix Bauch, Linn Bieske, and Bastian Schneider.

For the 45th edition of Atlantik-Brücke’s flagship program, 18 Americans and 29 Germans from diverse
fields, including government, corporate, startups, and media, came together in Detroit to embrace varied
perspectives, forge new connections across disciplines, industries, and continents, discuss the pressing
issues of our time, and constructively challenge the status quo.

Considering implications of geopolitical shifts for Germany and the US

After an immersive get-together on the arrival day, the first days of the conference focused on developing
and discussing political, economic, and social scenarios for a world in 2029, considering potential
geopolitical shifts and their implications for Germany and the US in particular. Several breakout sessions
provided an in-depth analysis of potential futures for Germany and the US, emphasizing the importance of
strategic foresight in anticipating and navigating complex global challenges. Following this, eminent
leaders from academia, the economy, and state politics provided insights into political and economic trends
in Michigan and the broader Midwest, as well as Michigan’s significance as a swing state in the upcoming
presidential election.

[related] Further discussions centered on developing a transatlantic perspective on pressing political, economic, and social questions that are expected to gain importance in the coming years. Regarding technological disruption, managing AI and balancing innovation with regulation for business, security, and society was identified as a key issue. In discussions on how to strengthen democracy and social cohesion in Germany and the US, the group proposed various tangible measures, such as investing in local and balanced journalism, funding exchange programs, promoting media education, and incentivizing community-building activities or civil service for young people.

Another group focused on exploring Western security strategies against rising authoritarian powers, proposing periodic military-to-military engagements to encourage European and Indo-Pacific military observers to attend US and allied joint military exercises.

From a diplomatic perspective, further approaches included encouraging more diplomatic engagement to
support Ukraine and Taiwan across both regions. On the economic front, the discussions advocated for
greater resistance against monopolistic behaviors and corruption. In terms of geo-economic statecraft in
21st-century innovation, key proposals included establishing a US-European semiconductor research
institute, enhancing partnerships with the Global South, such as through infrastructure investments, and
fostering digital cultural youth exchanges. Other deep conversations touched on transatlantic cooperation
on clean energy and sustainability, sharing lessons on migration, and investing for stability and prosperity
in the Global South.

Field trips to Detroit’s inner city

After these two days of intense and thought-provoking discussions, the group embarked on several field
trips to Detroit’s inner city. First-hand insights into the revitalization of Detroit’s urban core, its reinvention
as America’s automotive capital, and its ongoing transformation into a vibrant hub for startups and
technological innovation thoroughly reshaped our perspectives on the city that long stood as a symbol of
the decline of the US industrial heartland.

Another dimension was added with a closer look at Detroit’s cooperation with its Canadian neighbor, the city of Windsor. The diversity of the greater Detroit area and the critical role of its Arab-American communities in the upcoming presidential elections were discussed with the Arab-American mayors of Dearborn and Hamtramck. A visit to the world-renowned Ford Rouge Factory complex marked the beginning of the fifth conference day and provided the group with not only a glimpse into the complex’s century-spanning history but also a close-up observation of modern-day assembly line production.

As a counterpart and complement, the next appointment led the group to the United Auto Workers labor union, where UAW president Shawn Fain delivered an impressive report on the association’s work and the 2023 strike against the Big Three automakers, which gained national attention and resulted in record concessions for auto workers across America. A guided tour through a revitalized quarter of the city and a dinner hosted by a renowned couple of art collectors concluded the day, leaving the Young Leaders with a lasting impression of Detroit’s hands-on mentality as well as the diversity and richness of African-American art and culture in the city.

An expert panel on Detroit’s and Michigan’s role as a hub for life sciences opened the final day of the
conference, highlighting the importance of transatlantic cooperation, particularly in research. Following
this, two US Air Force generals shared their experiences on sustainability, resilience, and readiness,
providing valuable advice on leadership in an increasingly complex environment. Further expert
discussions on supply chain resilience, the use of AI in fintech, and Detroit’s outstanding role in music
completed three days of immersive field trips and gave us significant final impressions of a city we will
never see in the same light again.

The experience throughout one week of programming, discussions, and immersive activities was nothing
short of transformative. From on-site visits to engaging with local journalists, state senators, investors,
entrepreneurs, and artists, the program offered a deep dive into the remarkable urban renewal of Detroit’s
metropolitan area. The group witnessed firsthand how a courageous investment community, committed
business and policy representatives, fearless community leaders, and inspiring cultural thought leaders
came together to drive a profound transformation of the city’s economic and social ecosystem. At the same
time, we immersed ourselves in the political and societal landscape of a key swing state leading up to the
presidential election in November.

The key takeaway of the conference was evident to all attendees: Embracing diverse perspectives and
engaging with peers who constructively challenge one’s thinking and offer fresh insights is among the most
rewarding and enriching experiences. As leaders in business ecosystems, societies, and democracies on
both sides of the Atlantic, we can achieve more when we understand each other, adopt each other’s
perspectives, and partner closely. At the heart of it all are shared values, joint ambitions, commitment, and
curiosity to lead through continuous change in an ever-evolving world, rather than just following the pack.

Promoting peace and prosperity for all

Growing up in Cameroon, it became apparent at a young age that living in a developing country can limit your life prospects. I witnessed several of my schoolmates drop out of primary school to support their families who faced economic hardships. I was fortunate enough to live in several countries such as Germany, France, the People’s Republic of China, and Italy. But even in these developed countries, I encountered many young people who worked extremely hard to fulfill their dreams yet never stood a chance to succeed due to existing structural barriers.

[related]These personal experiences not only exposed me to the societal effects of underdevelopment and inequality but also fueled my desire to contribute toward finding sustainable solutions for promoting peace and prosperity for all. Today, they continue to be a source of personal motivation, especially in my current role as a Member of the German Bundestag. I am a member of the Committee for Digital Affairs as well as the Finance Committee, where I serve as Deputy Speaker for Finance of the Social Democratic Party’s (SPD) parliamentary group. In this role, I aim to achieve a just and fair society in which everyone can participate and realize their goals, irrespective of their race, gender, religious belief, sexual orientation, or socio-economic background.

I first encountered Atlantik-Brücke through the various political events they organize in Germany. The insights I received from several alumni of the Young Leaders Conference, such as Metin Hakverdi, Tim Klüssendorf, and Verena Hubertz, fueled my desire to join this network. I was particularly keen to participate in the German-American Young Leaders Conference, as it would give me a unique opportunity to discuss current domestic, bilateral, and global issues with experts from different areas such as business, politics, journalism, culture, and academia. I believe that such an interdisciplinary approach is indispensable to finding sustainable solutions to common challenges.

With regard to the current multiple crises and challenges, such as the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, climate change, and the rise of populism and nationalism, it is our joint responsibility to protect the rules-based international order and our common values. The conference was an excellent opportunity to engage with some of the world’s brightest minds and future leaders and work towards designing urgently needed solutions.

The week in Detroit was full of new insights, fun, and determination. What surprised me the most was the fact that we grew together as a group very quickly despite all our differences. Despite different approaches and opinions, the common goal of making the world a better place was a strong unifying element. We had very critical and controversial discussions, but they were always constructive. Everyone was passionate about their opinion but always open to the arguments of others. We celebrated each other but were also aware that, as a group, we only represented a small fraction of our generation.

Attending this year’s Young Leaders Conference and joining the alumni network gave me the opportunity to continue building personal and professional bridges across the Atlantic. It’s all about building strong relationships and friendships. When you don’t understand certain political or economic developments, you want someone on the other side of the Atlantic whom you can call to discuss the issue with. Of course, it helps when you actually like the person and consider them a friend.

Es war eine Freude, an der ersten Young Leaders Conference im Jahre 1973 in Hamburg teilzunehmen. Vorgeschlagen für diese Konferenz wurde ich nicht von einer Persönlichkeit der Atlantik-Brücke, sondern von Christopher Emmet, geschäftsführender Vorsitzender des American Council on Germany in New York. Und das kam so:

[related]Im Sommer 1971 war ich zu einem Studienaufenthalt an der Columbia University in New York, um für meine Doktorarbeit, die sich mit den deutsch-amerikanischen Beziehungen während der Kanzlerschaft von Konrad Adenauer befasste, zu forschen. Vom ehemaligen Parlamentarischen Staatssekretär bei Bundeskanzler Kurt-Georg Kiesinger, Karl Theodor zu Guttenberg, dem Großvater des ehemaligen Verteidigungsministers Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, hatte ich eine Empfehlung für Christopher Emmet. Mehrfach habe ich Christopher Emmet und seine Mitarbeiterin, Sarah N. Fagin, in New York getroffen. So ist es dazu gekommen, dass Christopher Emmet mich für die erste Young Leaders Conference vorschlug. An diese Konferenz in Hamburg habe ich eine sehr gute Erinnerung.

Einige Jahre hatte ich mit anderen Young Leaders noch Kontakt, und eine Verbindung besteht bis heute mit Georg Jarzembowski aus Hamburg. Im Jahr 1991 wurden wir Kollegen im Europäischen Parlament, dem ich bereits seit seiner ersten Direktwahl 1979 angehörte. Wir sind auch heute freundschaftlich verbunden. In meiner Zeit als Fraktionsvorsitzender der Europäischen Volkspartei und Europäischen Demokraten im Europäischen Parlament (1999-2007) hat Georg Jarzembowski mich sehr unterstützt.

In einer Zeit großer Herausforderungen durch autoritäre Regime, so der verbrecherische Krieg Russlands gegen die Ukraine, ist die Partnerschaft mit den USA von großer Bedeutung.

Die Programmatik der Young Leaders Conference 1973 in Hamburg sowie auch die darauffolgende Konferenz 1975 in Racine, Wisconsin, haben mein Bewusstsein für die Notwendigkeit enger transatlantischer Beziehungen sowohl zwischen Deutschland und den Vereinigten Staaten als auch der EU und den USA bestärkt. Bei allen Unterschieden bei der Beurteilung politischer Fragen haben wir doch ein gemeinsames Wertefundament: Freiheit und Demokratie. In einer Zeit großer Herausforderungen durch autoritäre Regime, so der verbrecherische Krieg Russlands gegen die Ukraine, ist die Partnerschaft mit den USA von großer Bedeutung.

Wenn ich Einladungen der Atlantik-Brücke bekomme, nehme ich gern an Veranstaltungen teil. Leider konnte ich 2023 der Bitte der Atlantik-Brücke, aus Anlass der 50-Jahr-Feier der Young Leaders Conference eine Rede zu halten, nicht entsprechen, weil eine gut überstandene Operation mich daran hinderte.

Die transatlantischen Beziehungen sind gekennzeichnet von Höhen und Tiefen. Als ich mich für meinen Studienaufenthalt an der Columbia University für ein Stipendium beim Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienst (DAAD) bewarb, fragte der mich prüfende Professor: “Befindet sich die NATO in der Krise?“

Krisenhafte Entwicklungen hat es immer wieder gegeben. Heute sind – alles in allem – die transatlantischen Beziehungen stabil. Es ist zu hoffen, dass dieses nach den amerikanischen Präsidentschaftswahlen im November 2024 so bleibt. Gerade auch angesichts des Krieges Russlands gegen die Ukraine sind gute transatlantische Beziehungen sowohl für die USA wie die Europäer fundamental. Die amerikanische Forderung, dass die Europäer größere Verantwortung in der Sicherheits- und Verteidigungspolitik übernehmen, ist berechtigt. Deswegen sollte gelten: Atlantisch bleiben, europäischer werden.

We have much to learn from each other

My professional experiences have focused on combatting climate change through interdisciplinary collaboration across the public and private sectors. My work has spanned four continents and touched topics ranging from energy (dirty and clean) to transportation to the future of work. Most recently I was Partner & Chief Operating Officer at G2 Venture Partners, a climate-tech venture fund in the Bay Area. Soon I’m headed to Oxford to pursue a Master of Public Policy.

I first encountered Atlantik-Brücke when a friend offered to nominate me for the Young Leaders Program. I jumped on this opportunity as I love learning and interdisciplinary discussions. Atlantik-Brücke specifically appealed to me due to the focus on open societies and free trade, as well as individual freedom and democracy. As our world becomes increasingly siloed and people are scared to say what they truly think lest they be “cancelled,” building genuine cross-cultural connections in an environment designed to facilitate honest dialogue is the best path to ensuring truth prevails and achieving optimal outcomes. In my venture capital role, I was responsible for climate impact and ESG (Environmental Social Governance) diligence / measurement / reporting. Climate change is such a global problem and Europe has emerged as a strong leader in designing potential solutions, making this a prime topic for transatlantic collaboration. Last summer my team made our first German investment, and we are increasingly working with European investors.

I really appreciated digging into social and economic policy debates with other participants who vehemently disagreed with me.

[related]Our week together changed my perspectives in so many ways. First – Detroit really impressed me, defying stereotypes of a dying city. I grew up nearby in Wisconsin, but this was my first trip to Detroit. The revitalized downtown, the modernized factories, and most importantly the hard-working people behind these movements were inspirational. Second – I was surprised by the extent to which Germany and America are facing similar challenges, from immigration to security to energy supply to social unrest. We have much to learn from each other! Finally, I really appreciated digging into social and economic policy debates with other participants who vehemently disagreed with me. I learned so much by being pushed to defend views that were often the most conservative in the room, realizing gaps in my knowledge or logic, and truly understanding perspectives on the other side. Multiple times I was deeply impressed by the data-driven rigor behind positions I previously discounted.

Of course, by far the most meaningful takeaways are the friendships and connections that I trust will endure for years. I look forward to watching this group continue to change the world and hope to be helpful in their journeys. I was particularly impressed by how many participants already have influential policy roles at such a young age, from serving in parliament to running think tanks – this has pushed me to think bigger as I transition from the business world to the public sector. Finally, I loved hearing everyone’s personal transatlantic stories, as I am actively considering how to build a life across multiple cultures and geographies that is impactful and exciting but still grounded in community.

50 years of joined responsibility in the democratic West

This year’s Young Leaders Conference is a special one: Atlantik-Brücke has been running this program for fifty years. Every year since 1973 we bring together 25 young high potentials each from the United States and Germany and we offer an inspiring program. What becomes of it, that is in the hands of the participants. Over the past five decades, diverse networks have emerged, friendships, communities of interest, cooperation – and above all there is the idea that the partners of the transatlantic West – for historical and cultural reasons – have a high degree of joined responsibility.

[related]In his famous and impressive work “A History of the West” the German Historian Heinrich August Winkler[1]offers a historiographical work that sees the transatlantic space in the northern hemisphere constituted by a normative project, namely that of “the American Revolution in 1776 and the French Revolution in 1789 in the form of indispensable human rights, the rule of law, the separation of powers, popular sovereignty and representative democracy”. This normative project is “what holds the West together at its core and what makes global appeal more than ever”.

And: The project of the West also involves those who have gone astray in a catastrophic way as a second chance. In this sense, the founding of the Atlantik-Brücke in 1952 was a signal that a few years after the World War II and the catastrophe of the Holocaust Germany got the chance to return to the civilized world. In addition to the “never again” came the other basic conviction of the second German democracy: “never alone”. And this “never alone” finds its special expression in the founding of the Atlantik-Brücke in the year 1952 and in the start of the Young Leaders program a good 20 years later.

In 1973, like today, but for different reasons, there was a great need to give new impetus to civil society exchange between Germany and the USA. The particularly challenging developments were:

The collapse of the world currency system of Bretton Woods. As early as August 15, 1971, the United States had unilaterally broken its promise to exchange the dollar for gold at any time. This process went down in currency history as the “Nixon shock”. The peg to the dollar became a problem for many partners because America’s inflationary monetary policy took no account of other countries. U.S. Treasury Secretary John Connally’s blunt statement, “the dollar is our currency, but your problem” remained relevant. Foreign central banks lost interest in importing inflationary pressures from the US into their own country via fixed exchange rates. They began phasing out their interventions to support the dollar. In 1973 the Bretton Woods system finally came to an end.
The first and most serious oil price crisis in the autumn 1973, caused by the Yom Kippur War. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) cut production by about five percent to pressure Western countries for their support of Israel. On October 17, 1973, the price of oil rose from around 3 US-Dollar per barrel to over 5 US-Dollar, an increase of about 70 percent. Over the course of the following year, the world oil price rose to over 12 US-Dollar per barrel, although traded volumes had returned to normal. The global oil market has been a political market ever since.

The course was set anew in the year of 1973 in terms of monetary policy and energy policy. That required international cooperation and transatlantic partnership. The conditions for this were by no means easy and good. In the United States, President Nixon came under increasing pressure from the Watergate affair, and an impeachment became more and more likely. In the Federal Republic of Germany, Chancellor Willi Brandt was under pressure after his reputation had peaked in the light of Ostpolitik and the Nobel Peace Prize especially as the price-wage spiral had been set in motion with the wage round in the public sector (Klunker round).

During this confusing time, which was still characterized by the West-East conflict, the idea arose to develop a new format for the exchange between interested but not yet established transatlanticists in Germany and the US. In view of this attractive offer, it is not surprising that already the alumni from the first year include distinguished individuals such as Hans-Gert Pöttering, former President of the European Parliament, US Senator Chuck Schumer, and Max Warburg.

In the now fifty years of our Young Leader program, a network of committed transatlanticists has established who, coming from their different worlds of experience, cultural backgrounds, and professions, are committed to the idea of the Atlantik-Brücke in a variety of responsibilities. If the decision to set up the Young Leaders program had not been made in 1973, it would be high time now. Because global change has reached a new level, which intensifies political, social, and economic upheavals and, through the simultaneity, creates a historical challenge and shapes the concept of the turning point in time (Zeitenwende).

What we are now experiencing is nothing less than the end of European modernity, which was also a transatlantic modernity. Modernization began after 1800 with the industrial revolution and paved the way for human self-empowerment against the background of the French and American revolutions. Starting in the transatlantic West, this promise of freedom, responsibility and prosperity made its unstoppable march through the world – of course not without setbacks, not without conflicts, not without doubt. In any case, the fall of the Iron Curtain was associated with the expectation that this triumphal procession would now finally be fulfilled globally – the normative project of the West would become the undisputed standard.

President George Bush Sr. expressed the expectation in 1992, in the spirit of this modernization hypothesis, that China would inevitably become a democracy if trade was carried out intensively enough with the country. Today we know that this expectation was wrong; the system competition turned into a sharp system conflict.

Even more: the turning point in time (Zeitenwende) reveals that the world is losing its European, even its transatlantic character. Because two fundamental factors are changing that have carried this European modernization over the past two centuries: The use of fossil fuels is coming to an end in the foreseeable future, which we now must and want to approach with great strides. And with the shrinkage of the labour force potential, overcoming the Malthusian population trap associated with the industrial revolution turns into the challenge of continuously adapting the economic system to this shrinkage. We are not well prepared for this, neither in terms of economic theory nor in terms of economic policy.

Therefore, it is even more important that we in the democracies of the West exchange experiences on how this double transformation can succeed, how climate neutrality can be achieved with a shrinking population. We need all the advances in efficiency that are conceivable. And they will have the best chance of being embedded in civil society in western democracies. However, this only becomes an attractive role model for other regions of the world if one’s own learning is critically monitored. The Young Leaders Program is of particular importance here, as an institutionalized bridge of experience across the Atlantic.

As if that weren’t enough to intensively strengthen the exchange in the transatlantic West, the Russian aggression is challenging us in a new way, at least one that we thought was overcome. The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine may be the latest global conflict that has its origins and development in Europe and its history and that asked other regions of the world to take a position. However, many states in the Global South are already unwilling to sanction Russia’s blatant violation of international law in the same way as the states of the transatlantic West are doing. This reflects the tectonic shifts in world politics.

The important periods of worldwide economic exchange and interaction were always dominated by a political hegemon. This was true in the 19th century with the Pax Britannica and in the 20th century with the Pax Americana. This will no longer apply to the next phase of globalization, the interests are too different, the economic perspectives are too diverse, and the global power competition is too important. Despite all the political changes in the USA, Barack Obama’s Pivot-to-Asia strategy remains a challenge for the Europeans, because it not only reflects a change in political priorities, but also the socio-structural change resulting from the continuous shift in the centre of population of the USA from the north-east to the southwest. The majority of Americans are now closer to the Pacific than to the Atlantic.

The world is drifting apart differently than expected 30 years ago, the market economy does not automatically lead to democratization, and it also lives without civil society – at least as far as we are experiencing the process. The transatlantic West, on the other hand, stands for exactly this triad: democracy – market economy – civil society. This results in our special responsibility in the changing times.

For more and more people, the feeling of being overwhelmed weakens the hope of being able to reap the fruits of freedom. Our daily life is subject to interventions based on decisions made far from home. This fact fuels resistance to the networks and dependencies of globalization.

Of course, we are also under pressure in our societies: right-wing populism, disappointment with democracy and mistrust of institutions are the hallmarks of a development that can only be observed in nuances in almost all western democracies. As at the end of the 19th century – the time that went down in the history books culturally interpreted as the fin de siècle – we are once again stating exhaustion and tiredness with slight irritability as a socially dominant phenomenon. For more and more people, the feeling of being overwhelmed weakens the hope of being able to reap the fruits of freedom. Our daily life is subject to interventions based on decisions made far from home. This fact fuels resistance to the networks and dependencies of globalization.

Globalization is inextricably linked to the creation of mutual – mind you, mutual – dependencies. This may sometimes be opaque and trigger resistance. On the other hand, only transparent communication, personal experience and “friendly conversations in public spaces” (Hannah Arendt) can help. This is the only way we can prevent hierarchies from destroying the networks again.[2] And we have to be careful not to undermine globalization ourselves through controls, barriers and bans for fear of resistance to it. When the freedom of others causes fear and opposes the space for one’s own active, positive freedom to shape things, then it is all the more important to live together democracy, market economy and civil society.

In this tangle of our time, orientation is even more necessary. For us Germans, the following still applies: “never again” and “never alone”. For this we are referred to the functional core of our institutions and systems, and it is of great importance to win new partners and friends in the world again and again. That is the current special purpose of the Atlantik-Brücke’s Young Leaders Program, but also of our teachers travels and the New Bridge Program started in 2021. Victor Hugo said, “Nothing in the world is so powerful as an idea whose time has come”. That was true of the Young Leaders program in 1973, and it is true today.

I wish all past and future participants continued interesting conversations, insights, contacts, and new friendships. Or in the words of the German historian Heinrich August Winkler: “The history of the West is an open story, far from being told, because the subversive power of the ideas of 1776 and 1789 is far from exhausted and the normative project regarding the universality of human rights is unfinished. … The West would give itself up if it accepted this state of affairs.” That’s why the Atlantik-Brücke continues to be so contemporary. But unlike for a long time since 1952, we must stand up for the normative project of the West in our own Western societies. To do this, we need each other just as much as we used to in the exchange with third parties. You could also say that this is the new joint mission.

Today, this provides an answer to the question of the content of the transatlantic relationship, the answer to which Henry Kissinger so urgently demanded thirty years ago: “We can speak about the necessity of German-American friendship, European unity, or Atlantic partnership, but the real challenge is that any relationship that does not define what we can do together is doomed to becoming formalistic and, after a while, drained of content. The challenge of our period, then, is not to affirm our friendship, but to affirm what actions we can take together and the purposes we can fulfil”.[3]

This year’s German-American Young Leaders Conference of Atlantik-Brücke was held at Schloss Neuhardenberg in Brandenburg from August 12-18, as the program celebrated its 50^th anniversary. In addition to a thought-provoking week filled with discussions on a broad array of topics relevant to the transatlantic partnership, this year’s cohort was fortunate to experience an alumni reunion with Young Leaders from programs across the 50 years.

What matters

Over the course of the week, we had the opportunity to hear from a plethora of diverse, high-level leaders across many disciplines. The list of esteemed guest speakers even included three Ministers/Ministers of State from the current government. In addition, we spent two days at the epicenter of German power and politics in Berlin with various onsite visits.

[related]Already on the first evening, the group had the pleasure of welcoming Minister Klara Geywitz. She not only shared remarks on urban development and participated in a discussion on what the US and Germany can learn from each other, but also took time to connect with us Young Leaders over dinner. This set the stage for the intensely packed and high-caliber days to follow.

Throughout the week we engaged in deep conversations with experts on critical current topics. Colonel Jill Long shared her perspective on leadership through her experience in the US Air Force. Prof. Dr. Andreas Dombret, former member of the Board of the German Bundesbank, shared his thoughts on the “Three I’s: Invasion, Inflation and Interest rates”, sparking vivid conversations on global economic structures. Dr. Mareike Ohlberg offered her insights and expertise on China strategies, highlighting the need for transatlantic cooperation. A further session focused on Germany’s “Zeitenwende” and the state of the German military with Colonel Frank Reiser and LTC Sebastian Bley from the German Army Headquarters. It was a pleasure to discuss matters of transatlantic and international security in such an open and trusting atmosphere. Another dialogue on voter identity was led by journalist Martin Klingst, who has spent extended time interviewing Trump voters in the US and AfD voters in Germany.

The first of two day trips to Berlin began with a visit to the AI Campus of Merantix in Berlin, where we learned about visionary startup ideas who are leveraging the potential of AI. Later, at the Federal Chancellery, we had a thorough discussion with Minister Wolfgang Schmidt, who shared intimate insights on his day-to-day work in German politics, as well as his view on current transatlantic and global challenges. As if this wasn’t enough, we also got to visit the ARD Capital Studio and met with Tina Hassel, who provided her own perspective on some of the topics we addressed in the Chancellery. What a great way to compare notes, contrast perspectives on current issues and see the media at work.

The second day in Berlin began directly in the seat of German democracy at the Bundestag. Minister of State in the Federal Foreign Office Dr. Tobias Lindner, a Young Leader himself, engaged in a lively discourse with us about both the transatlantic partnership as well as Germany’s role on the world stage. Our cohort’s Members of Parliament then led us on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Bundestag, sharing their own stories and offering insights into their daily work. The day was capped off back in the private sector, as Google opened their doors for us and provided an insightful panel on AI and Machine Learning, featuring Eveline Metzen, Michael Neuber and Slav Petrov. What a week!

What really matters

In addition to the thought-provoking sessions with the guest speakers, we split up into working groups ourselves, in order to explore creative solutions to tackle several pressing issues. The following four topics were intensively discussed and worked on, culminating in short policy suggestions which can be found in separate documents:

Through extended discussions on these critical topics, we enjoyed immensely hearing the different perspectives around the table that come with the diverse backgrounds of our fellow Young Leaders. Learning from each other in the working groups was an enriching aspect of the week.

What matters most

Aside from the official part of the program, a unanimous highlight of the conference was simply getting to know each other and ultimately forming what will become deep and fruitful friendships, beyond a professional network. We certainly made use of the evenings, with or without the occasional glass of wine, exchanged stories, compared notes on the day and the speakers, enjoyed each other’s company and had a laugh. This personal connection is what building transatlantic relationships is all about.

Lucky for us, we not only got to know each other in our cohort, but we also coincidentally got to know many Young Leaders alumni who joined the 50^th program anniversary celebrations on the second to last day. As part of the evening’s official agenda, Prof. Dr. Michael Hüther offered opening remarks on the last fifty years of the transatlantic relationship, followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Joachim Freiherr von Falkenhausen, Christiane Hoffmann, Sarah Kelly, and Theo Koll, moderated by Atlantik-Brücke CEO Julia Friedlander. The evening was filled with many inspiring conversations across the Young Leaders cohorts, which instilled an immediate sense of community on us. What an honor to be welcomed into such an open-minded network.

We whole-heartedly thank the Atlantik-Brücke team and the selection committee for what will prove to be a life-changing week for us.

Young Leaders-Empfang in Berlin

Nach einem äußerst ereignisreichen Jahr 2022 kamen die Young Leaders-Alumni zusammen, um die vergangenen zwölf Monate Revue passieren zu lassen und neue Impulse zu gewinnen.

Drei Alumni gaben einen Einblick in ihre für die aktuelle Lage besonders relevante Erfahrung. Nils Aldag (YL 2022), Gründer und Managing Director von Sunfire, einem Startup im Bereich erneuerbare Energien, sprach über die europäische Energiesicherheit. Der stellvertretende Fraktionsvorsitzende der FDP-Bundestagsfraktion, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, MdB (YL 1997), ging auf die Notwendigkeit einer außen- und sicherheitspolitischen Neuausrichtung Deutschlands nach dem russischen Angriffskrieg gegen die Ukraine ein. Und Julia Reuss (YL 2018), Public Policy Director Central Europe bei Meta, beleuchtete den Einfluss technologischer Innovationen auf westliche Demokratien und Gesellschaften. Der Gastgeber des Abends, Jan Kallmorgen (YL 2004), Berlin Global Advisors, moderierte die Diskussion.

Alumni verschiedener Jahrgänge kamen miteinander und den Vortragenden ins Gespräch. Der Abend war auch eine Feier der Freundschaften und Verbindungen, die durch das Young Leaders-Programm der Atlantik-Brücke entstanden sind, welches im kommenden Jahr sein 50-jähriges Bestehen feiert.

Die Anwesenden waren überzeugt, dass das kommende Jahr nicht minder herausfordernd sein wird als das Jahr 2022. Die tiefgreifenden geopolitischen Herausforderungen und Umwälzungen stellten das westlich-liberale Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmodell vor große Herausforderungen. In diesen unruhigen Zeiten haben Freundschaften sowie persönliche Verbindungen einen hohen Stellenwert.

“A lot to be hopeful for”

A major land war is being waged in Europe. Against this backdrop, nearly 50 up-and-coming decision makers convened outside Atlanta, Georgia, to engage in dialogue about the transatlantic alliance in times of crisis, to deepen understanding, and strengthen ties between the rising generation of Germans and Americans.

As Albert Einstein said in 1955, “The important thing is to not stop questioning.” Indeed, questions defined the Atlantik-Brücke’s 2022 Young Leaders Conference — tough questions, searching questions, light-hearted questions, two-in-one questions, and follow-up questions. And the conference provided the ideal platform to ask these questions and engage in lively debate, both amongst the participants and also to panelists and guest speakers.

There were questions about environmental sustainability, about consumer health and supply chain resilience.

Young Leaders also posed questions to one another. These ranged from the factors necessary to start a business to the forces kindling extremism in the military and law enforcement, from the manifold definitions of diversity to the meaning of victory in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Some questions were more light-hearted: Does it rain every day in Georgia? Who can drive this golf cart faster?

We arrived at some answers. No one left Foxhall Resort without knowing that lithium is an important component of EV batteries. The problems of polarization and distrust — whether in Germany or the United States, in politics or business — ran through the crises that occupied our discussions. It does seem to rain every day in Georgia, at least in August.

But these conclusions were preliminary, at best. Most of all, the conference afforded us the opportunity to step out of the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives and to consider how new, enlarged perspectives might offer solutions to some of society’s most vexing problems.

WORKING GROUPS

Some of these problems were addressed by the conference’s four working groups.

These working groups were: lessons learned from Covid-19, supply chain resiliency, diversity, equity, and inclusion and the implications of the war in Ukraine on energy security.

1. Lessons learned from Covid-19: future direction for public policy, investment opportunities, and digital transformation

The working group identified numerous problems exposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, including the fragmentation of funding for scientific innovation and failed communication. One possible solution would be the creation of a transatlantic entity tentatively named the North Atlantic Science Organization. It would be governed by a transatlantic executive board and help ensure equitable access to vaccines and therapeutics. Questions posed to the working group included whether such a body might not better be instituted within an existing organization, such as NATO or the WHO.

2. Future-proofing supply chains: balancing prosperity and social responsibility

The working group used EV (Electronic Vehicle) batteries as a case study and identified three supply chain pressure points. The first was accountability, illustrated by the example of cobalt sourced in countries, such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, that use forced labor. The second was environmental trade-offs, such as the reliance on lithium processing, which involves transportation to China and use of vast sums of water and electricity. The third was complexity, captured by a web of reporting requirements to satisfy Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria. Some common threads emerged from the many solutions proposed by the working group, including blacklisting and whitelisting certain materials and countries; developing corporate consortiums to create power in numbers when weighing tradeoffs and avoiding a race to the bottom; public loan or utility loan schemes to assist companies with financing constraints; blended finance or public-private partnerships; enhanced digitalization and international standardization.

3. Advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in political and business leadership:

The working group emphasized data, implicit bias, and mentorship. It argued that not simply data collection but also disclosure is essential to identifying problems and maintaining high standards. In that vein, it posed a challenge to Atlantik-Brücke to assemble a more diverse slate of Young Leaders — and to this year’s participants to put forward a more diverse slate of nominees. Among the solutions to implicit bias that were put forward was removing certain identifying details from job applications, such as headshots. In addition to these more structural factors, the working group stressed the importance of mentorship because it means having allies on the inside. The use of quotas was debated, with one point of contention being which identity categories are subject to such parameters, and questions focused on the need for multiple axes of diversity, including diversity of thought and educational background.

4. The war in Ukraine and its implications for energy security: tackling climate change in times of global instability

The working group focused on the central aim of reducing energy dependence on Russia, ideally with renewable sources of energy. In the short term, this might mean alternative supplies such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) or biomass, as well as reducing consumption. It could also involve the development of energy efficiency technology. More long term, the working group discussed blue hydrogen and green hydrogen, as well as battery supply and storage. These methods allow greater reliance on European partners and less on American-made products. A framework suggested by the working group would be an energy supply steering group — an alliance that would allow the European Union to negotiate gas purchases as one body.

GUEST SPEAKERS & OFF-SITE VISITS

Beyond participant-led working groups and panels, the conference also included outside speakers and off-site visits in and around Atlanta.

Georgia State Rep. Angelika Kausche, a German-American lawmaker, shared her pathway into politics as an immigrant to the United States. We learned how Melanie Moltmann, the German Consul General in Atlanta, Ga., sees effective civil rights education throughout the South. Docent-guided tours of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in downtown Atlanta showcased how far the United States has come but also how human rights continue to be threatened around the world. Matthias Hoffman, President & CEO of the German-American Chamber of Commerce of the Southern U.S., highlighted the strong business relations that underpin the U.S.-German relationship — over $500 billion in German businesses investment in the U.S., which employ nearly a million people in all 50 states. An example of this business activity was shared by the Regional Vice President of the S.E. Region for Kuehne + Nagel, Jürgen Gentzke, who also explained challenges facing the global supply chain. Dennis Wagner, CEO of BESTAR Steel Group, shared insights about bringing a German company to the US.

At the Coca Cola headquarters, Rocky Rief, the Senior Director for Economic and Fiscal Policy, fielded a wide range of questions. At the Emory University Global Health Institute, an official from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the institute’s researchers and staff described challenges and lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. Eike Jordan, the President of the Halle Foundation, graciously hosted our group at the Halle Estate, where we heard from Pat Wilson, Commissioner for the Georgia Department of Economic Development. At Porsche’s North American headquarters, Kjell Gruner discussed the power of a brand, as we watched Porsches zoom through the experience center track in the background.

CONCLUSION

After extolling the virtue of questions, Einstein, in his 1955 comments, advised, “never lose a holy curiosity.”

In preparing to write this report, we asked conference participants to share recollections about the experience. What came through in the reactions was how shared curiosity made the week’s events such a success.

One participant wrote of finding “new thoughts, ideas, and possibilities.” Another remarked on the speed with which “intimate relationships formed,” in part because of the wide-ranging discussions, “from science communication to diversity and inclusion, to military leadership (and the number one song on the German charts right now…).”

One comment noted the need to “accept uncertainty and engage deeply in discourse whether we dissent or agree.” A reflection that seemed to sum up these observations noted: “Although a running joke of the conference was the doom and gloom of the worst-case scenarios for the U.S. and Germany, there was still a lot to be hopeful for in this group. There were routinely optimistic outlooks shared in even the worst contexts.”

Through questions and curiosity, the conference allowed us to arrive at something that feels unusual these days: hope.

Deutsch-Amerikanische Young Leaders Konferenz 2020-2021

Angesichts der weltweiten Pandemie war bis zur letzten Minute unsicher, ob die Young Leaders-Konferenz 2020/2021 stattfinden würde. Doch glücklicherweise konnten in der ersten Augustwoche fast fünfzig Young Leaders auf Schloss Neuhardenberg in Brandenburg zusammenkommen, um über die Zukunft der transatlantischen Beziehungen zu diskutieren und die dringendsten Herausforderungen zu erörtern, die auf die USA und Deutschland zukommen. Für viele war es das erste große persönliche Zusammentreffen seit mehr als eineinhalb Jahren.

Das Coronavirus stand im Mittelpunkt der Gespräche mit Bundesgesundheitsminister Jens Spahn und Sigmar Gabriel, dem Vorsitzenden der Atlantik-Brücke und ehemaligen deutschen Vizekanzler. Die Young Leaders betrachteten die Pandemie jedoch nicht als “Black Swan”, also ein unwahrscheinliches und überraschendes Ereignis, sondern als Herausforderung und Spiegelbild einer sich rasch verändernden Welt; eine Katastrophe, die Schwachstellen aufzeigt und politische Systeme auf eine harte Probe stellt. Da Wissenschaftler davor warnen, dass die nächste Pandemie nicht eine Frage des “ob”, sondern des “wann” ist, fragte sich die Gruppe, was diese neue Realität für die nationale und geopolitische Dynamik bedeuten könnte. Werden intensive Phasen der Instabilität weiterhin zu Fehlinformationen und wirtschaftlicher Unsicherheit führen, oder werden Regierungen, Banken und unabhängige Institutionen endlich lernen, zusammenzuarbeiten und sich effektiv um ihre Bevölkerungen zu kümmern und Allianzen zu festigen? Und wie werden sich andere globale Entwicklungen wie die Digitalisierung, steigende Temperaturen und autokratische Strömungen auf all dies auswirken?

Diesen wichtigen Fragen haben die Young Leaders sich im Laufe der Woche in einer Reihe von inoffiziellen Gesprächen und bei Besuchen in Privatwohnungen und Unternehmen genähert. Der Chargé d’Affairs der US-Botschaft in Berlin, Clark Price, empfing die Gruppe in seiner Residenz; der ehemalige Bild-Chefredakteur und Atlantik-Brücke-Vorstandsmitglied Kai Diekmann traf sich mit den Young Leaders in den Räumen seines New Media-Startups Storymachine, um über die sich wechselnde Dynamik zwischen traditionellen Medien und sozialen Plattformen zu diskutieren. General James Mattis, ehemaliger US-Verteidigungsminister, sprach per Zoom über Leadership und die Bedeutung von Allianzen. Colonel Jill Long, Luftattaché an der US-Botschaft in Berlin, betonte bei einem Abendessen am Flughafen Neuhardenberg, wie wichtig Vielfalt ist. Michelle Müntefering, Staatsministerin für Internationale Kulturpolitik, traf die Young Leaders im Auswärtigen Amt. Jan Kallmorgen von Berlin Global Advisors empfing die Gruppe bei sich zu Hause, wo Dr. Thomas Bagger, Leiter der Abteilung Außenpolitik im Bundespräsidialamt, über Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik sprach. Professor Dr. Andreas Dombret, Senior Advisor bei Oliver Wyman und Mitglied des Vorstandes der Atlantik-Brücke, sprach über die globale Finanz- und Wirtschaftsentwicklung, insbesondere mit Blick auf die Nachwirkungen der Pandemie. Am Ende der Woche trafen die Young Leaders mit Michael Werz zusammen, Senior Fellow am Center for American Progress und ebenfalls Vorstandsmitglied der Atlantik-Brücke, der uns seine Erkenntnisse über die Auswirkungen des demografischen Wandels auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks mitteilte.

[related]Schließlich wurden alle Young Leaders Arbeitsgruppen zugeteilt, die sich mit vier Themen befassten: die sich verändernde Rolle Chinas, die Auswirkungen der politischen Polarisierung, Covid-19 und der Klimawandel. Da die Young Leaders aus den unterschiedlichsten Bereichen kommen – aus Politik, den Medien, der Wirtschaft und Think Tanks – bezogen sich die Präsentationen am Ende der Woche auf diese Bereiche und vereinten konkrete, praktische Lösungen mit prägnanten Analysen. Die China-Arbeitsgruppe, die China sowohl als Rivalen als auch als Partner charakterisierte, entwickelte beispielsweise eine Strategie für “Wettbewerb, Zusammenarbeit und Konfrontation”. Dieser Ansatz forderte die EU und die USA auf, ihre Strategien im Bereich der internationalen Entwicklungshilfe neu zu überdenken, um mit China in Bezug auf Soft Power und wirtschaftliche Macht besser konkurrieren zu können. Inspiriert von Deutschlands früherer Wehrpflicht schlug die Polarisierungsgruppe die Einführung eines nationalen Zivildienstes für Amerikaner vor, der ihrer Meinung nach zu einem besseren Miteinander von Bürgerinnen und Bürgern unterschiedlicher sozioökonomischer Hintergründe führen könnte. Die Gruppe zum Thema Covid-19 befürwortete die Entwicklung eines länderübergreifenden Systems zur Verfolgung von Arzneimitteln, damit bei der nächsten Pandemie Impfstoffe und Lieferketten transparenter und effizienter werden.

Der Klimawandel war nicht nur Thema der letzten Arbeitsgruppe, die vorschlug, ein durchschlagenderes internationales System von Kohlenstoffreduktionszielen einzuführen, er warauch das übergreifende Thema der Konferenz. Angesichts der Waldbrände, die in der Türkei, in Griechenland und in Kalifornien wüteten, und angesichts der verheerenden Auswirkungen der jüngsten Überschwemmungen in Deutschland war die globale Erwärmung stellte sich der Klimawandel für die als eine unmittelbare existenzielle Bedrohung dar. Die Dringlichkeit dieses Problems wurde von vielen Rednern zum Ausdruck gebracht, von der Geschäftsführerin einer Schweizer Versicherungsgesellschaft, Andrea Stürmer, bis hin zu einer beeindruckenden jungen Vertreterin von Fridays for Future, Helena Marschall. Durch die Notwendigkeit politischer Zusammenarbeit (die sich während der Covid-19-Pandemie als äußerst problematisch erwiesen hatte) macht der Klimawandel deutlich, dass die eigentliche Herausforderung der Mensch ist. Wie die Referentinnen und Referenten im Laufe der Woche bekräftigten, verfügt die Menschheit zwar über die Technologie, um die Erderwärmung aufzuhalten. Die Frage ist nur, ob es einen gemeinsamen Nenner gibt, um diese Technologien auch nutzen zu können. In diesem Zusammenhang ist eine starke Führung wichtiger denn je.

Die Young Leaders trafen auch Graf von Hardenberg, der die Geschichte des ehemaligen Anwesens seiner Familie vorstellte und dessen Rolle als Schauplatz von Widerstandstreffen während des Nationalsozialismus beschrieb. Das Schloss wurde nach der Ermordung des Widerstandskämpfers Claus Graf von Stauffenberg enteignet, zu DDR-Zeiten in eine Schule umgewandelt und später in ein Konferenzzentrum und ein Denkmal für den Antifaschismus – eine Geschichte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts in Deutschland und seiner Rückkehr vom Rande der totalen Katastrophe im Kleinen.

Es gibt viele Gründe, über den Zustand der Welt im Jahr 2021 entmutigt zu sein, aber, wie den Young Leaders in Neuhardenberg vor Augen geführt wurde, gibt es auch Gründe, hoffnungsvoll zu sein. Nach fast zwei Jahren der Angst und Isolation erinnerte die Konferenz daran, wie wichtig es ist, sich von Angesicht zu Angesicht zu treffen, und unterstrich, dass der direkte Austausch die beste Grundlage für Vertrauen und Zusammenarbeit ist. Als Young Leaders 2020/2021 – vielleicht die längste Kohorte in der Geschichte des Programms – sind wir davon überzeugt, dass eine sozial-ökologische Transformation für unsere und zukünftige Generationen entscheidend ist.

General James Mattis, ehemaliger US-Verteidigungsminister, sprach auf der Young Leaders-Konferenz 2021 der Atlantik-Brücke. Er war per Video-Konferenz zugeschaltet.

James Mattis ist ein pensionierter Vier-Sterne-General des U.S. Marine Corps, der als 26. Verteidigungsminister diente. Während seiner mehr als vier Jahrzehnte in Uniform befehligte Mattis Streitkräfte im Persischen Golfkrieg, in Afghanistan nach 9/11 und im Irakkrieg 2003.

Von 2007 bis 2010 war er Befehlshaber des United States Joint Forces Command und diente auch als Supreme Allied Commander Transformation der NATO. Von 2010 bis 2013 war er Kommandeur des Zentralkommando der Vereinigten Staaten.

Nach seiner Pensionierung war Mattis als Davies Family Distinguished Visiting Fellow an der Hoover Institution der Stanford University tätig. Er ist Mitherausgeber des Buches “Warriors & Citizens: American Views of Our Military”.

Rund 100 deutsche und amerikanische Young Leaders Alumni kamen zum diesjährigen Neujahrsempfang. In Königswinter ging es um weit mehr als die großen Herausforderungen für Europa und die USA und die anstehende Präsidentschaftswahl der Vereinigten Staaten: Der vertrauensvolle Austausch und die transatlantische Verbundenheit standen im Vordergrund des Treffens.

Ein Signal der Offenheit, des Zusammenhalts und des Austauschs ist von den Young Leaders Alumni der Atlantik-Brücke während ihres Neujahrsempfangs in Königswinter ausgegangen. In der mehr als 140 Jahre alten Hirschburg kamen rund 100 Alumni des Programms für deutsche und amerikanische Führungskräfte zusammen. David Deißner, Geschäftsführer der Atlantik-Brücke, betonte in seiner Einführung, dass der Verein gerade in politisch angespannten Zeiten den Austausch mit den USA umso mehr intensivieren müsse.

[related]Eine Podiumsdiskussion gab einen Ausblick auf transatlantische Herausforderungen 2020 in den Bereichen Außenpolitik und Handel. Das mit Vorstandsmitgliedern der Atlantik-Brücke besetzte Panel wurde von Julia von Cube, Journalistin beim WDR und Young Leader Alumna, moderiert. „Die amerikanische Außenpolitik wird zunehmend innenpolitisch konnotiert sein“, sagte Michael Werz, Senior Fellow des Center for American Progress. Darüber hinaus verändere sich die Demografie auf dramatische Art. Das demografische Zentrum der USA habe sich in den vergangenen 25 Jahren um jährlich 20 Meilen von Nordosten nach Südwesten verschoben.

Zwischen US-Präsidentschaftswahl und doppeltem Konflikt für den Westen

Friederike von Tiesenhausen Cave, Global Head of Public Affairs bei Bloomberg LP, sagte, sie rechne zu Beginn der neuen Dekade nicht mit einer Gelegenheit für eine Wiederbelebung der transatlantischen Beziehungen, da die in diesem Jahr anstehenden Präsidentschaftswahlen die US-Politik dominierten. Für den Bündnispartner Europa gehe es in erster Linie um Schadensbegrenzung. „Die Europäische Union sollte jedoch keine zu hohen Erwartungen haben. Ein Präsident der Demokraten wird nicht automatisch besser für Europa“, sagte sie.

Der stellvertretende Vorsitzende der Atlantik-Brücke, Michael Hüther, Direktor und Mitglied des Präsidiums des Instituts der deutschen Wirtschaft, sprach von einer doppelten Auseinandersetzung für den Westen. Der erste Konflikt trage sich außenpolitisch zwischen demokratisch verfassten Marktwirtschaften und autokratisch gelenkten Wirtschaftssystemen zu. Innerhalb demokratischer Gesellschaften spiele sich ein zweiter Kampf ab: Den Institutionen werde immer weniger vertraut. Hüther forderte: „Wir müssen die politische mit der sozial-ethischen Frage verbinden. Die demokratische Politik muss wieder stärker gestaltend den Rahmen für Wirtschaftssysteme setzen.“

Mit Unvorhersehbarkeit in den transatlantischen Handelsbeziehungen 2020 rechnet Anahita Thoms, Partner und Head of Germany’s International Trade Practice bei Baker & McKenzie. Sie sagte, dies werde die Handelspolitik in Richtung der EU prägen – insbesondere, nachdem das Phase-1-Abkommen zwischen den USA und China abgeschlossen sei. „Handelskriege kennen keine Gewinner“, sagte Thoms. Die seit mehr als zwei Jahren andauernden Handelskonflikte hätten für alle beteiligten Akteure negative Effekte.

Plädoyers für multilaterale, regelbasierte Ordnung in Außenpolitik und Handel

In der anschließenden Diskussion ging es um Versäumnisse der US-Sozial- und Wirtschaftspolitik, den Charakter von Handelsabkommen hinsichtlich ökologischer Aspekte und die Lage der deutschen Automobilindustrie. Die Zukunft der multilateralen, regelbasierten Ordnung in der internationalen Wirtschafts- und Handelspolitik unter dem Dach der Welthandelsorganisation (WTO) kam ebenfalls zur Sprache. Die Teilnehmer warfen darüber hinaus einen Blick auf die NATO-Übung „US Defender Europe 2020“ und die Ursachen für das stark gefährdete Nuklear-Abkommen mit dem Iran (JCPOA) und analysierten die Herausforderungen in Bezug auf das Gaspipeline-Projekt Nord Stream 2. Die Folgen des Klimawandels und der klimaschutz- und sicherheitspolitische wie wirtschaftliche Umgang damit bildete einen weiteren inhaltlichen Schwerpunkt. Zum Abschluss der Paneldiskussion beleuchtete Michael Werz die Hintergründe und mögliche Entwicklung des Impeachments gegen US-Präsident Trump.

Nachdem die Alumni und Vorstände ihre Gespräche bei einem Spaziergang zum Drachenfels fortgesetzt hatten, sprach Generalkonsulin Fiona Evans. Die Diplomatin betonte, sie wolle kommunikative Echokammern in der Gesellschaft aufbrechen. Das oft negative USA-Bild in der Berichterstattung vernachlässige die vielen positiven Aspekte des transatlantischen Verhältnisses. So seien die USA der Staat mit den höchsten ausländischen Direktinvestitionen in Nordrhein-Westfalen. Außerdem lobte sie als Beispiel für funktionierende transatlantische Partnerschaft den US-Bundesstaat Minnesota. Als Teil des Projekts „Smart Climate Municipalities“ hat sich Minnesota dazu verpflichtet, von der etwa im Transport- und Verkehrssektor erzielten Energieeffizienz der Stadt Lüdenscheid für die Unternehmen und Städte des Bundesstaates im mittleren Westen zu lernen. „Wir müssen den riesigen globalen Herausforderungen nicht alleine begegnen“, betonte sie in der anschließenden Fragerunde.

„What’s your story?“

Moderiert von Journalist Cherno Jobatey sprachen vier junge Nachwuchsführungskräfte unter dem Leitgedanken „What’s your story?“ sehr offen über berufliche Projekte ebenso wie über ihren persönlichen Lebensweg. Karoline Klose thematisierte ihre Erfahrungen im Entwicklungshilfe-Programm für Haiti und in der Hauptabteilung Friedenssicherungseinsätze der UNO in zehn Ländern – darunter Sudan – innerhalb von zehn Jahren; Cristina Hernandez, Social Impact Fellow der Robert Bosch Stiftung, berichtete von ihrem Weg als Tochter mittelloser mexikanischer Einwanderer in Südkalifornien bis zur dekorierten Soldatin der U.S. Army, bis zur Harvard University, bis ins Weiße Haus; Cornelius Pollmer, Korrespondent der Süddeutschen Zeitung mit Sitz in Leipzig, erzählte von seinen Wanderungen auf den Spuren Theodor Fontanes und von außergewöhnlichen Begegnungen mit Menschen in der Mark Brandenburg für die Recherche zu seinem Buch „Heut ist irgendwie ein komischer Tag“; Finn Haensel, Gründer der Sanity Group und Vorstandsmitglied der Movinga GmbH, erläuterte seinen politischen Einsatz schon als 17-Jähriger in der Jungen Union bis heute als Unternehmer für das Legalisieren von Cannabis zur medizinischen Behandlung.

Schließlich läutete ein gemeinsames Dinner in der Hirschburg den festlichen Ausklang der Zusammenkunft der Alumni ein.

German-American Young Leaders Conference
August 3-9, 2019, Queenstown, Maryland

Forty-five Young Leaders from the United States and Germany came together for a week of deep engagement on transatlantic issues in August 2019 in Queenstown, Maryland. On a political level, this year’s cross-sectoral group of experts and young decision-makers observed a more volatile transatlantic relationship than previous classes. In times of rising nationalism and populism in both countries, the issues at stake were emotional, debates heated. Nonetheless, the bonds forged in less than a week show just how strong our transatlantic connection is on a fundamental level.

Seventy years after the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), many areas of debate between the U.S. and Germany are not new, but the domestic and global context is. At home, both countries are seeing a rise in right wing populism, which is driven by perceived injustices, national identity, and an inability to fully understand international interdependencies. Globally, the maelstrom created by the simultaneous rise of China, Russia’s geopolitical shift, President Trump, technological progress, increased global mobility, and climate change produces a complex new reality. In this piece, we focus on two overarching topics of the conference: global security policy and communication with domestic audiences.

Sustaining security cooperation in the face of mutual threats

Global security was a salient theme throughout this year’s conference. Julie Fisher, Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State gave an overview of the U.S. perspective, experts from the Hudson Institute, the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Center for American Progress provided deep insight into the variety of viewpoints in Washington. The conversation with Emily Haber, German Ambassador to the United States, was a highlight of the conference and illustrated the German approach to foreign policy.

Virtually all discussions with experts from policy, business and the media touched on one point of contention between Berlin and Washington: German spending on its military. All NATO members committed to spending 2% of their GDP on defense. Germany’s budget, albeit growing, is not as significant as the U.S. and other NATO partners want it to be. Although this debate predates the Trump administration, the tone between Washington and Berlin has become harsher in recent years. Many of the conference’s interlocutors share the impression that the current U.S. style is counterproductive, although there is broad agreement that Germany is not yet complying with the Wales Pledge.

The Young Leaders conference showed that “the 2% debate” is as much if not more of a discourse problem than a substantial policy problem. At the core, foreign policy interests are, arguably, even more aligned than in previous years. There is broad agreement among policy makers that both countries are facing similar threats from outside the NATO alliance, especially in cyberspace, but also in conventional terms. Working-level relations between the foreign policy and defense bureaucracies on both sides are strong, as Colonel Terry Anderson, Associate Professor at the Naval War College, explained in detail. Germany has upped its defense spending significantly and is committed to further increases by 2024. Threat assessments vary due to geographical and historical differences, but there is significant common ground given the rise of China, Russia and various non-state actors challenging our free way of life in “the West”.

Facing the facts – and the perceptions

On a political level and in the wider public arena, mutual perceptions of Germany and the US are focused on the negative. The Trump administration’s retreat from several international regimes coupled with its insistence on more defense spending in the NATO context is seen as erratic and inconsistent in Germany. The confrontational tone from Washington and President Trump’s “America first” rhetoric feeds into a German perception of the United States as a global bully. This is echoed in public perception polls. While 72% of Americans perceive the relationship to be positive, only 24% of Germans believe the same (Pew, 2019). An Atlantik-Brücke study finds that 84.6% of Germans view German-American relations negatively (Atlantik-Brücke / Civey, 2019).

On the other hand, Germany is seen as tight-fisted, somewhat naive vis-à-vis Russia, and unreliable in terms of defense commitments in Washington. Within Germany, there is no domestic consensus about the depth and level of threat actually posed by Russia, leading to somewhat cautious and unassertive policy. These behaviors can in part be explained by history and geography but are often misread as a mere lack of German engagement.

Debating social media “debates”

The Young Leaders and most conference speakers came to a common conclusion: It is extremely important to “argue out” the emotional aspects of the discussion in order to get to the core of the policy issues, especially in such politically charged times. The natural forum for such debate is social media, though it has both positive and negative impacts on public discourse. It is well established that the algorithms behind Facebook, Twitter and others aim to reach users likely to agree with the stated views, not bring together varied perspectives for lively discussion. While social media is successfully being used to galvanize devoted followers, it is failing to spark the true political debate society needs.

Complicating matters further is the global trend of deliberately misleading information and manipulation of public discourse. Deep fakes (videos whose images and sound are realistically altered to send a different message) are on the rise and studies have found that there is a 70% higher likelihood that people retweet falsehoods than facts (MIT, 2018).

Breaking out of the echo chamber

Think tanks and the media indicated that the public’s perception of the U.S.-German relationship – and knowledge and understanding of foreign policy – can be tangibly strengthened by facilitating communication at the city- and state-level. Hometown heroes and local politicians can reach their communities through social and traditional media, and good old-fashioned ‘coffee and cake’ events. One Young Leader noted that this may be especially powerful if the leader is a reliable local figure who does not usually discuss foreign policy issues, because it would reach non-traditional audiences from a base of trust.

This is also true for policy areas other than international security. In various formats, the Young Leaders also worked on a range of other issues, including but not limited to migration, gender and identity, the rise of populism and the future of the media industry in an age of rapid digitization. Experts such as Elmar Theveßen, Washington Bureau Chief of ZDF and Jan Philipp Burgard, U.S. Correspondent & Deputy Bureau Chief of ARD, Germany’s national public broadcasting services, helped the group understand the key challenges transatlantic media professionals are navigating today. The group’s visit to Lockheed Martin shed light on controversial aspects of international trade and security.

Conclusion

Despite the current public perception and strained diplomatic rhetoric, nearly every discussion highlighted the common values, trends, and threats shared by both the U.S. and Germany. Across the board, speakers noted that the “working level” interaction between governments, civil societies, and economic institutions is quite strong and not as impacted by recent tensions as feared. This enforces the belief that the stronger the ties between individual actors in business, media, the public sector and civil society, the less lasting harm short term political tensions can do to our transatlantic alliance. This year’s Atlantik-Brücke Young Leaders are hopeful that this transatlantic storm will pass.

Young Leaders-Auswahl 2019

Ohne Zweifel gehört die Young Leaders-Konferenz der Atlantik-Brücke zu den prominentesten und erfolgreichsten Programmen unseres Vereins. Seit 1973 bringt die Konferenz junge Führungskräfte aus Deutschland und den USA für eine Woche intensiver Gespräche zusammen. Die Themen der Konferenz werden von den Teilnehmern wesentlich mitgestaltet und fokussieren auf die drängendsten politischen, wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Fragen auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks. Die Alumni bleiben einander auch nach der Konferenz oft über Jahrzehnte eng verbunden und bilden inzwischen ein Netzwerk von über 1500 engagierten Transatlantikern aus unterschiedlichen Bereichen der Gesellschaft. In diesem Jahr wird die Konferenz in Queenstown, Maryland, stattfinden.

Wie auch in den Vorjahren war das Bewerbungsverfahren hoch kompetitiv. Die 21-köpfige Jury hatte sich bereits intensiv mit den 256 Bewerbungen für die 45 Plätze bei der diesjährigen Young Leaders-Konferenz befasst, bevor sie sich am 10. April traf, um gemeinsam die Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten auszuwählen. Die erfolgreichen Kandidaten wurden auf Grundlage von beruflichem Erfolg und Führungsverantwortung, transatlantischem Interesse, gesellschaftlichem Engagement und der erkennbaren Bereitschaft, sich aktiv am Programm zu beteiligen, ausgewählt. Ein weiteres Augenmerk der Jury lag auf der ausgewogenen Zusammensetzung der Gesamtgruppe nach Sektoren, Geschlecht und Herkunft. Alle Bewerber und Nominierer werden im Laufe der nächsten Tage über die Entscheidung der Jury informiert.

Etwa die Hälfte der Bewerbungen wurden in diesem Jahr von Frauen eingereicht, womit sich der Trend der letzten Jahre erfreulich stabilisiert: In den letzten zehn Jahren ist der Anteil der Bewerberinnen signifikant gestiegen. Während es 2009 nur rund halb so viele Bewerberinnen wie Bewerber gab, bewarben sich 2016 erstmals mehr Frauen als Männer.

Besonders herausragende Bewerbungen gab es 2019 aus dem Wissenschaftsbereich. In diesem Jahr waren außerdem mehr Bewerber aus Start-Ups nominiert als in den Vorjahren. Unter den deutschen Bewerbern gab es zahlreiche Vertreter aus großen Unternehmen und Consulting-Firmen; bei den US-Bewerbern überwogen Vertreter aus dem Bereich Think Tanks und Non-Profits sowie Regierungsmitarbeiter.

An einem winterlichen Samstagabend im Januar kamen rund 100 Young Leaders-Alumni zum traditionellen Neujahrsempfang in Berlin zusammen. Zum Auftakt sprach ein Experten-Panel über das Thema Künstliche Intelligenz. Es diskutierten Dr. Stefan Heumann, Mitglied des Vorstands der Stiftung Neue Verantwortung und Sachverständiger der Enquete-Kommission „Künstliche Intelligenz“ des Deutschen Bundestags, Dr. Julia Reuss, Stabschefin im Büro von Dorothee Bär, Staatsministerin für Digitales, Bundeskanzleramt, Bernd Reuther, MdB (FDP) und Mitglied des Ausschusses für Verkehr und digitale Infrastruktur, Deutscher Bundestag sowie Dr. Robin Tech, Mitgründer und Geschäftsführer, AtomLeap. Die Panelisten sprachen über die ethischen Implikationen von Künstlicher Intelligenz, über den Vorsprung der USA und Chinas in der Entwicklung von KI sowie über die Frage, wie die deutsche und die europäische Politik KI in Europa fördern können.

[related]Im Anschluss an das Panel sprach Omid Nouripour, MdB (Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen), Außenpolitischer Sprecher der Grünen-Bundestagsfraktion und Vorstandsmitglied der Atlantik-Brücke, mit dem Moderator Ali Aslan darüber, wie eine sinnvolle europäische Antwort auf die Außenpolitik der Regierung Trump aussehen könne. Er ging auch auf seine persönlichen Erfahrungen mit dem vom US-Präsidenten verhängten Einreisestopp ein, der in der Presse oft als “muslim ban” bezeichnet wurde. Dem Außenpolitikexperten Nouripour wurde als gebürtigem Iraner aufgrund der Anordnung des Präsidenten die Einreise in die USA untersagt. Er warnte vor zu großem Optimismus hinsichtlich der transatlantischen Zusammenarbeit auf politischer Ebene; hier werde gerade viel Vertrauen zerstört. Dennoch zeigte er sich zuversichtlich, dass es, unabhängig von der aktuellen Regierung, eine große Verbundenheit zwischen Europäern und Amerikanern gebe, die auch weiterhin bestehen werde.

Die Young Leaders-Alumni ließen den Abend bei Musik des Sängers Björn Missal mit Begleitung des Pianisten Sebastian Bertram, Drinks und Gesprächen ausklingen.

At Schloss Neuhardenberg in Brandenburg, close enough to the German capital but at the same time far enough to focus on the group itself, forty-eight young professionals from government, diplomacy, academia, security, military, business, art, and sports on both sides of the Atlantic met for the 40th German-American Young Leaders Conference. The discussions were shaped by one overarching topic: In the face of both external and internal pressures, what is the future of the transatlantic partnership? What are the values that we should hold onto, and how do we adapt to new challenges like digitalization, demographic change, and a shifting world order?

Program

As the ties between the United States of America and Germany might be loosening, the debate at the U.S. Embassy Berlin with Robin S. Quinville, Deputy Chief of Mission, and moreover the talks at the Federal Foreign Office with State Minister Michelle Münterfering and Ambassador Antje Leendertse encouraged the group to take the current situation as a chance to reflect where we stand concerning our common values and standards in the transatlantic partnership. Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, MdB (Young Leader 1997) inspired this year’s cohort to look at the interests and issues that currently unite the transatlantic partners, rather than reminiscing about the past.

[related]During the week, the group of young professionals visited Axel Springer SE for a discussion with Julian Reichelt, Chairman of the BILD Editorial Offices & Editor-in-Chief of BILD and BILD Digital, followed by a tour of the publishing house’s newsrooms. In addition, a talk with Roland Jahn, Federal Commissioner for the Records of the State Security Service of the former German Democratic Republic, offered a wider understanding of the German past – not only for the American participants of the program. Exchanges with Stefan Winners, Member of Burda Digital’s Board, Hans Raffauf, co-founder and Chairman of Clue and Till Behnke, founder of nebenan.de and betterplace.org , provided insights into digital transformation in Germany. A panel discussion on migration with Professor Dr. Naika Foroutan, Director of the Berlin Institute on Integration and Migration Research (BIM), and Farhad Dilmaghani, Former State Secretary, gave an outline of the questions of social stability Germany has to tackle.

The different tone in the transatlantic partnership was the subject of several discussions and meetings. The talk with Dr. Andreas Dombret, former Member of the Board of Deutsche Bundesbank & Member of the Board of Atlantik-Brücke e.V., focused on economic stability and changes in economic transatlantic decisions. German defense priorities and transatlantic security cooperation within NATO were the topics of Major General Michael Hochwart’s visit. The keynote of Federal Minister Jens Spahn (Young Leader 2014) addressed the future of the transatlantic partnership, but also the challenges Germany faces domestically, such as immigration and integration. Spahn’s speech was part of a summer reception with Atlantik-Brücke Members and Young Leaders Alumni bridging the generations of the program.

Discussion Points

Underpinning the entire week was an informal and interpersonal exchange about the shared and differing values between the U.S. and Germany. Despite deceptively similar cultures on the surface and cultural affinity, we discussed the differing concepts and expectations of leadership. Some of the speakers encouraged the group to think carefully about what our shared values are, as large parts of both the German and the American public find the transatlantic partnership and NATO increasingly less relevant.

Despite the provocative language, working level relationships appear to be strong; some even claimed stronger than before. Furthermore, there was a general consensus from speakers and participants alike that Germany should invest more heavily in its military readiness. This discussion also highlighted the diverging public opinion on the two sides of the Atlantic. Many speakers pointed to a complacency of the German public, as a generation of young people has grown up in peacetime and sees less relevance in organizations like NATO. On the American side, pithy messaging about “fairness” in defense spending has mobilized public sentiment. In either case, these trends demonstrate the need for better and more digestible messaging around the relevance of the transatlantic partnership and NATO in particular.

Many felt that China’s growing power is encroaching on American hegemony.

Another important foreign policy and security factor that was discussed was the shifting world order, especially with regards to Russia and China. In the case of Russia, speakers and participants from different industries expressed concern at its influence throughout the ex-Soviet bloc, desire to weaken the EU, skillful use of media outside of its borders, and the need for a strong NATO to deter further disruption. Many felt that China’s growing economic power and influence through One Belt, One Road and other initiatives are encroaching on American hegemony. While we debated the exact nature of China’s ascent and Russia’s ultimate intent, it became clear that the U.S. and Germany should articulate a clearer vision and strategy concerning these two countries for the future.

The potential influence on societies and workforces of AI and digitalization is vast. Our discussions centered on the implementation of redistributive policies, universal basic income, the role of education and, even more challenging, how to define purpose in a world with drastically fewer jobs. Demographic change calls to mind migration, but in fact includes issues like an aging and shrinking population and changing ethnic majorities. Another important point that came up was social inclusion: While our societies become more pluralistic, many still struggle to access equal opportunities.

The media’s ability to knit a society together or tear it apart was constant throughout the week. Speakers highlighted their concern at Russian propaganda in Germany and the lack of fact checking or investigation on social media.

In response to this slew of challenges, conference participants were also focused on concrete solutions to strengthen the transatlantic relationship. Suggested projects ranged from engagement through educational institutions to using entertainment and news channels as means to educate different segments of the public on the strength of our existing bonds and the continued necessity for them. Proposals also included more formal partnerships between sister-cities and other demonstrations of the two countries’ synergies across business, science, and various industries. Lastly, we discussed the need for more civic engagement to restore trust in and excitement about the political process and democracy.

“Privilege comes with responsibility”, as one of the Young Leaders pointed out as a summary of the intensive week of debate and discussions. This is driven by the firm belief that turning the back on the transatlantic partnership is not an option.

Young Leaders-Konferenz in Santa Cruz und Silicon Valley

47 Nachwuchsführungskräfte aus den USA und Deutschland kamen diesen August in Santa Cruz, Kalifornien, für die 39. Deutsch-Amerikanische Young Leaders-Konferenz der Atlantik-Brücke zusammen. Die unmittelbare Nähe von Santa Cruz zum Silicon Valley bestimmte viele der Konferenzthemen – beispielsweise Diskussionen zu den Chancen und Herausforderungen technischer Innovation. Die Gruppe besuchte Firmen wie Palantir und Udacity und traf auf namhafte Gastredner wie Kent Walker (SVP & General Counsel bei Google) und John O’Farrell (General Partner bei Andreessen Horowitz). Bei einem Gespräch mit Emily Cohen vom San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing ging es um die Schattenseiten der Erfolgsgeschichte des Silicon Valley.

Auch Diskussionen über Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik beschäftigten die Konferenzteilnehmer. Prof. Francis Fukuyama (Stanford University, YL ’85) legte im Gespräch mit den Young Leaders seine Perspektive auf die Zukunft der Demokratie dar. Prof. Donald Abenheim und Col. Peter Frank (beide von der Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey) vermittelten die Herausforderungen, denen sich die NATO aktuell gegenübersieht. Ein Gespräch mit der deutschen Fußballlegende Jürgen Klinsmann schließlich war für viele Teilnehmer ein Highlight der Woche.

Zum fünften Mal waren die Young Leaders-Alumni der Atlantik-Brücke zum Auftakt des Jahres zur New Year’s Reunion eingeladen. Etwa 100 Alumni aus den Programm-Jahrgängen 1973 bis 2016 kamen am 14. Januar im Commerzbank-Tower in Frankfurt zusammen. Die bevorstehende Amtseinführung Donald Trumps zum 45. US-Präsidenten und Einschätzungen zur künftigen Außenpolitik der USA bestimmten die Gespräche. US-Generalkonsul James Herman betonte zum Auftakt der Reunion, dass die Bedeutung der transatlantischen Beziehungen größer denn je sei.

Die kritische Wahrnehmung der traditionellen Medien in großen Teilen der Öffentlichkeit und die Zukunft des Journalismus waren Thema einer Paneldiskussion zwischen Michael Kolz, Stellvertretender Programmgeschäftsführer von Phoenix/ZDF, und Kevin O’Brien, Chefredakteur der Handelsblatt Global Edition. Beide waren überzeugt, dass Journalismus, der sich durch sorgfältige Recherche und hohe Ansprüche auszeichnet, auch weiterhin eine wichtige gesellschaftliche Rolle einnehmen wird.

Am Finanzplatz Frankfurt durfte aber auch ein Gespräch über die Bedeutung von Fintechs nicht fehlen. Professor Dr. Andreas Dombret, Mitglied des Vorstands der Deutschen Bundesbank und Schatzmeister der Atlantik-Brücke, diskutierte mit Martin Wiesmann, Managing Director & Vice Chairman of Investment Banking EMEA, J.P. Morgan, Miriam Wohlfarth, Founder & Managing Director des Fintechs RatePay, und Jörg Hessenmüller, Head of Group Development & Strategy der Commerzbank darüber, wie kleine Fintech-Unternehmen etablierten Banken Konkurrenz machen, welche Rolle der Staat bei der Förderung von Innovation spielt und wie die Entwicklung von Fintechs in Deutschland im Vergleich zu anderen Nationen zu bewerten ist. Das gemeinsame Abendessen im Restaurant Margarete nutzten die Young Leaders-Alumni zum generationenübergreifenden Networking.

Der idyllische Starnberger See war die Kulisse für die diesjährige Young Leaders-Konferenz. Die Konferenzteilnehmer diskutierten eine große Bandbreite von Themen, die von den Chancen der Digitalisierung über den Auftstieg des Populismus in Euorpa und den USA bis zu den aktuellen Herausforderungen der Europäischen Union reichte. Eine Reihe prominenter Redner sprach mit den Young Leaders: der Vorsitzende der Atlantik-Brücke Friedrich Merz, John O’Farrell, Partner der Risikokapitalgesellschaft Andreessen Horowitz, der Vizepräsident des Europaparlaments Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, MdEP (ALDE), Burkhard Balz, MdEP (EPP), Kevin O’Brien, Editor-in-Chief der Handelsblatt Global Edition, der Ressortleiter Außenpolitik der Süddeutsche Zeitung, Stefan Kornelius, Dr. Thomas Enders, CEO der Airbus Group, sowie die Parlamentarische Staatssekretärin a.D. und Landes- und Fraktionsvorsitzende der CDU Rheinland-Pfalz Julia Klöckner, MdL (CDU), um nur einige zu nennen. Auch ein Besuch bei der Burda Digital GmbH in München, einer Flüchtlingsaufnahmeeinrichtung des Roten Kreuzes und beim Bundesnachrichtendienst standen auf dem Programm. Zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte der Konferenz setzte sich die Gruppe zu gleichen Teilen aus Frauen und Männern zusammen.

Rund 90 Young Leaders-Alumni der Atlantik-Brücke sind am 16. Januar 2016 in Hamburg zu ihrem traditionellen Neujahrsempfang zusammengekommen. Die jungen Führungskräfte nutzten in der Warburg Bank und in der Anwaltskanzlei Latham & Watkins LLP direkt neben dem US-Konsulat an der Außenalster die Gelegenheit, das Netzwerk ihrer transatlantischen Kontakte zu pflegen und auszubauen.

Der inhaltliche Teil des Programms startete mit einer Diskussionsrunde zur Frage „Wie gehen Unternehmen mit Disruption um?“. Dazu stellten sich Jürgen Fitschen, Co-Vorsitzender des Vorstands der Deutsche Bank AG, Jürgen Großmann, Gesellschafter der Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH und Gisbert Rühl, Vorsitzender des Vorstands von Klöckner & Co. SE den Fragen des „Handelsblatt“-Chefredakteurs Sven Afhüppe. Dabei wurde schnell klar, dass Disruption sehr unterschiedliche Formen annehmen kann. Die Notwendigkeit zur Transformation kann durch politische Vorgaben, gesellschaftliche Prozesse oder technische Innovationen ausgelöst werden. Von der jeweiligen Branche abhängige Beispiele dafür sind die Bankenregulierung, die Energiewende oder vor allem auch die Digitalisierung des gesamten Liefer- und Leistungsprozesses mit Hilfe von Cloud Computing, Big Data und Anwendungen der Industrie 4.0. Die Teilnehmer der Diskussion betonten, dass in der Disruption die Verantwortung gegenüber den Mitarbeitern entscheidend bleibe, so dass diese sich mit der technologischen Veränderung eines Geschäftsmodells in ihrer Qualifikation ebenso weiterentwickelten. Eine ehrliche Erläuterung und klare Kommunikation sei notwendig, um dieses Ziel zu erreichen. Mit Blick auf die andere Seite des Atlantiks stellten die Redner fest, dass die Entwicklungen aus dem Silicon Valley erhebliche Potenziale für etablierte europäische Industrien böten, da disruptive Innovationen entscheidend für die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit seien.

In einem daran anschließenden Gespräch zum Zustand der transatlantischen Beziehungen beantwortete Friedrich Merz, Vorsitzender des Vorstands der Atlantik-Brücke und Senior Counsel der Anwaltskanzlei Mayer Brown LLP, die Fragen von Sarah Tacke, justizpolitische Korrespondentin und Moderatorin des ZDF. Die wichtigsten Themen waren dabei die Verhandlungen um das Freihandels- und Investitionsabkommen TTIP, die Ursachen der und der Umgang mit der globalen Flüchtlingskrise sowie die politische Strategie für den Nahen und Mittleren Osten. Doch auch eine erste Bilanz der sich dem Ende neigenden Amtszeit von US-Präsident Barack Obama und die 2016 anstehenden Vorwahlen mitsamt den Chancen möglicher Präsidentschaftskandidaten wurden diskutiert. Friedrich Merz hielt fest, dass Europa und die Vereinigten Staaten mehr denn je einander als strategische Partner brauchen. Die Young Leaders-Alumni schalteten sich sowohl in die Podiumsdiskussion als auch in das Gespräch engagiert mit eigenen Fragen ein.

Nachdem der Neujahrsempfang mit einem gemeinsamen Lunch der jungen Führungskräfte und des Vorstands der Atlantik-Brücke bei M.M. Warburg & CO begonnen hatte, ließen die Teilnehmer den Abend in der Almhütte auf dem Süllberg bei Dinner und Drinks in bayerischem Ambiente mit Blick auf die Elbe ausklingen.

Young Leaders New Year’s Reunion in Berlin

Am 31. Januar 2015 kamen rund zweihundert Alumni des Young Leaders-Programms der Atlantik-Brücke zur New Year’s Reunion nach Berlin. Im Journalisten-Club von Axel Springer gab es Wiedersehen mit alten Bekannten und viele Gelegenheiten, neue Kontakte zu knüpfen. Doch auch das „Food for Thought“ kam nicht zu kurz. US-Botschafter John Emerson sprach über die aktuellen Herausforderungen für die transatlantischen Partner. Dabei ging es nicht nur um außen- und sicherheitspolitische Themen, wie die Bedrohung durch Terrorismus und die konfrontative Haltung Russlands, sondern auch um wirtschaftliche Fragen wie die geplante transatlantische Handelspartnerschaft TTIP und Kooperationsmöglichkeiten im Bereich Innovation.

Das Thema Innovation und Entrepreneurship wurde bei einem anschließenden Panel vertieft. Lars Hinrichs, Gründer und CEO der Cinco Capital GmbH und Gründer von Xing, Christoph Keese, Executive Vice President der Axel Springer SE, Christian Nagel, Partner und Managing Partner bei Earlybird Venture Capital sowie Dr. Felix Reinshagen, Mitgründer und Executive Director des Start-Up NavVis, diskutierten über die Herausforderungen, vor denen Start-Up-Unternehmer stehen, über die unterschiedlichen Voraussetzungen für Gründer in Deutschland und den USA sowie über die Notwendigkeit, den Status Quo in Frage zu stellen, um echten Fortschritt zu erreichen. Die Debatte wurde von Andreas Winiarski, Global Head of PR & Communications bei Rocket Internet moderiert.

Anschließend zogen die Alumni weiter ins Soho-House an der Torstraße, wo Dr. Géza Andreas von Geyr, Abteilungsleiter Politik im Bundesministerium der Verteidigung über den Wandel in der internationalen Sicherheitspolitik sprach. Bei einem Dinner und anschließenden Drinks ließen die Young Leaders den Abend ausklingen und machten die Nacht zum Tag.
